Art Extension Workshops for High School Students

The Metamorphosis Sessions are designed for high school students to build their repertoire of skills. We have beginner workshops for those with no experience and workshops to build on skills you have learned at school or through your own practice.

The workshops take place at Central Institute of Technology, 12 and 19 Aberdeen Street, Northbridge, in our state-of-the-art studios. All materials are provided for the workshops.

Our facilities allow you to get hands-on experience using specialised equipment. Our tutors are experienced artists who will share their knowledge and challenge you to transform your accepted ideas and methods.

Silver Jewellery: Beginner

This course will give you the skills to make simple silver jewellery using a range of techniques as well as offering you the ability to develop you own ideas and style. Create your own silver leaf pendant, a lovely ring and bangle to keep and the cost of the silver is included!

Silver Jewellery: Improve Your Technique & Finishing

Tutor Soham Harrison will build on your current skills, challenging you to produce high quality pieces in bronze and silver. Through making jewellery items such a chain mail bracelet and bezel stone set pendant or ring you will improve your technique and finishing. This course is perfect for those who have studied jewellery at school for at least a year and have sound hammering, soldering and polishing skills.

Letterpress: Introduction to Artisan Printing Beginner

Experience a traditional and beautiful art form that produces a tactile impression into paper. Letterpress has a 500 year history and was commonly used until the mid-20th century, it has recently has a resurgence in interest. Central has an excellent facility with traditional printing presses, equipment and one of the largest collections of typefaces in Western Australia. Small groups will be guided through the Letterpress process which involves composing and locking movable type into the bed of a press, inking it and pressing paper against it to form an impression. Participants will be able to experiment and create unique artistic prints. No experience is necessary to participate.

Low Tech Photography: Black & White Darkroom

Explore the lost art of SLR film photography and experience the process of developing photos in the darkroom to create various effects. This course is suited to students who study digital photography and already have photography and composition skills.

Ceramics: Wheelwork Beginner

 

Join ceramic artist and educator Warrick Palmateer and learn the skill of throwing a pot on a pottery wheel. Central has a state-of-the-art ceramics studio and is a great place to have some fun and learn wheelwork pottery. This is a beginner course and no experience is necessary.

Portraiture

Work with the portrait model to explore techniques that reveal essential structures and proportions, and heighten your powers of observation to capture unique images of individuals using charcoal, pencil and acrylics on paper and board. Tutor Angela Stewart is an expert portraitist with a lifetime of practice and art teaching. This course is ideal for experienced drawers, previous skills in portraiture are not necessary.

Illustration: Build on Your Technique

Illustration is the art of storytelling, informing and demonstrating text whether imagined or actual. Under the expert tuition of experienced artist and illustrator Julie Parsons you will learn how to use graphite sticks 2H to 6B in the creation of the illusion of form on paper. You will also experiment with various media including Aquarelle and water colour paint. This course is suited to experienced drawers who want to gain specific skills in illustration.

Sewing: Beginner

This workshop is designed for absolute beginners who have never used a sewing machine or overlocker and want to operate them while learning fundamental sewing skills. You will learn how to insert zips, darts, gathering and various types of seams. You will look at a commercial pattern and make a simple garment.

Sewing: Make a collared shirt or blouse

You will extend your sewing skills making a collared shirt or blouse. You will insert a collar and sleeves and learn finishing techniques.
