Psychologists FAQs

1. What can the Central TAFE Psychologist help me with?

Both Rob and Joyce can provide counselling for a number of psychological and emotional issues including depression, relationship problems, anxiety, stress (either personal or study related). They can also provide information on a range of mental health topics or refer you to specialists or agencies for more intensive support. Finally, the psychologists can also assist you with study skills and coping strategies.

2. How long do counselling sessions go for?

On average each session usually lasts between 30mins and 1hr.

Central TAFE students can access the Counselling service free of charge as long as they are currently enrolled.

Please be aware, the Central TAFE Counselling service is designed to be short term of approximately 6-10 sessions. If you require further support, the Psychologist will discuss with you about accessing alternative specialist agencies.

3. How do I make an appointment to see a Psychologist?

You can contact either of the Psychologists at the following locations during office hours
(8.30am -4.30pm, mon-fri).

If you are visiting the Psychologist directly, please ensure you knock on the door prior to entering.
(If the door is closed this may mean they are in a session with someone else.)

Alternatively  you can visit or phone the Student Wellbeing Centre, located on Level 2, Room N222 at the Perth Campus and they can contact the Psychologists for you, Ph: 9427 1893.

4. How much does it cost to see the Psychologist?

Its FREE!

As long as you are a currently enrolled Central TAFE student.

5. How many sessions can I have?

Although there is no exact limit, the Central TAFE Counselling service is designed to be short term of approximately 6-10 sessions. You may start off seeing the Psychologist weekly, then fortnightly, then less frequently (monthly or so,) depending of you level of support needs. Some students are simply happy to speak to the Psychologist as a one off.

If you do require further or more intensive support, the Psychologist will discuss referring you to alternative agencies or specialists.

6. Will the Psychologist discuss my problems with other people?

No! The counselling service is entirely confidential (except in extreme cases whereby the Psychologists believes you may harm yourself, others or you are engaging in highly illegal activity.)

Sometimes the two Psychologists may discuss their clients with each other simply to ensure they are providing the best quality service.

The Psychologists will NOT discuss your problems with your parents, lecturers, other TAFE staff or any outside person without your permission. However, if you are under 18yrs, the Psychologists may have to inform another adult about your problem, depending on the circumstances.

8. Can I choose to have either a male or female Psychologist?

Yes. We have two Psychologists available for students to see, Rob (male) and Joyce (Female).

Rob is a registered psychologist (No. 584) with more than 20 years experience.

He holds the following qualifications: Master Ed. GradDipPsych (Distc.), GradDipMangt (Distc.), GradDipEd (H&F) BaAppSci (Psych) in addtionto training in hypnosis.

His main treatment approach is based on cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). Details can be verified by the Psychologists Registration Board (WA).

Joyce Bok is a registered Psychologist (WA) with a Diploma in Education and Clinical hypnosis.  Joyce has worked in an educational setting as a psychologist for more than six years, assisting students in gaining coping skills and insight into their personal problems.  Joyce has worked with a wide range of students from various backgrounds (including international and indigenous) and various ages.   Joyce uses a variety of approaches to suit individual needs of students including CBT, Narrative Therapy and Brief Solution-Focused Therapy.   Her focus mainly consists of problem-solving, coping skills, personal self-development and awareness.

9. What sort of things can I talk about with the Psychologist?

Anything that is affecting your academic studies at TAFE. This could include personal problems, relationship difficulties, problems with work or study, issues around grief and loss, depression, anxiety, stress, personal conflicts, mental health, family worries, etc. If you are unsure whether or not a Psychologist can help you with your problem, you are welcome to phone them directly and ask.

If you are having problems with any of the following areas, you may be better off speaking to a Career Advisor or other Central TAFE staff. If so, contact the Student Wellbeing Centre on 9427 1893, or visit them at the Perth Campus, Level 2, Room N222.

  • Changing TAFE courses
  • Need help to find a job
  • Unsure about your future career options
  • Don’t like your current TAFE course
  • Further study options
  • Assistance with resume writing, interview techniques, letter writing, selection criteria, work experience, job applications.

10. What is E-Counselling?

Counselling via email. Some students feel that
e-counselling can be more convenient or provide them with more anonymity. However, please be aware that a response from a Psychologist can take up to three days and therefore e-counselling should not be used for critical or urgent problems.

11.  I am an International or AMEP student, can I still see the Psychologist?

Both the International Department and AMEP Department at Central TAFE have their own Psychologists or counsellors who can help you.

12.  My problem is urgent, can I speak to someone now?

It is not always possible for the Psychologists to see you straight away. If you need to speak to someone urgently you should phone one of the following 24hr services:

13.  Can I get information about Mental Health and Wellbeing?

Yes. The Psychologists can provide you with a number of different resources, links and information sessions about a variety of topics, for you to access.

14.  Can I get help for my friend?

The Psychologists are only available to current Central TAFE students. Although it is preferred that your friend should access the Psychologist themselves, the Psychologist can provide you with help and support if your friends’ problem are affecting you personally as well.
