English Courses

Central TAFE’s English Courses include:

  • General English (Elementary to Upper Intermediate) aims to provide students the communicative skills and cultural knowledge required so they can access higher level courses, travel, or perform casual work in an English speaking country.

  • English for Academic Purposes (Intermediate to Advanced) prepares students for study in Certificate and Diploma courses at TAFE or Australian Universities. It emphasises language use in an academic context including speaking, listening, reading and writing skills needed to interact with classmates and cope with assignments.

  • IELTS Plus – Preparation for IELTS and further study (Upper-Intermediate) prepares students for entry into tertiary courses at TAFE or University in Australia. This course focuses on two areas: first, developing skills and knowledge required to take and IELTS examination; and second, improving the general academic English language skills in an Australian context.

  • International Business English (Intermediate to Advanced) aims to improve students’ English language ability by practising speaking, listening, reading and writing in a range of business contexts.

Professional Teachers and Quality Programs

All of our friendly and professional teaching staff are fully qualified English Language instructors with at least 5 years teaching experience and have worked with students of all backgrounds.

Our programs and teaching methods are customised to suit the needs of our students. Our contemporary learning resources includes a variety of teacher-created, published, authentic and up-to-date materials including visual media and web-based materials.

There are no entry requirements for our English courses and we have programs for all levels from basic through to advanced. If you are studying English to meet the required proficiency level to enter one of our TAFEWA courses, we use IELTS, TOEFL or our own in-house testing to determine whether you meet entry requirements for our mainstream courses.

Recognised Qualifications

  • Certificates specify students’ English language level according to ISLPR scale

  • Certificates are recognised by NEAS, the Government of Western Australia and Education and Training International.

Other benefits

  • Experience the Australian Lifestyle. By studying on campuses with large numbers of Australian students, our international students readily mix and enjoy discovering the Australian lifestyle. Students also have numerous organised social and recreational activities that help them learn more about Australia and enjoy their time here.

  • Small class sizes. Our ELICOS classes have an maximum of only 18 students and there is always one main teacher and one or two support teachers for each class.

  • Further study opportunities. Many of our ELICOS students have “packaged” programs that allow them to begin English studies at the right time so that when they complete their English studies they can commence their TAFEWA course soon after. Packaging pathways with Universities can also be arranged.
