The redevelopment will consolidate training in the key areas of resource development, creative industries, community services, and science based disciplines.

The completion of the $8.2 million Newcastle Street print and jewellery facility, officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard in 2008, marked the conclusion of the first stage of the redevelopment.

The centrepiece of the new inner city training precinct is a $59.5 million facility located at 30 Aberdeen Street, due to be completed in 2010, which will link other College buildings in the area, as well as promoting stronger ties with the Northbridge business community.

This is an unprecedented investment in Central's training capability and will better equip the College to meet the requirement of tomorrow’s workplaces.

Central Institute of Technology began as Perth Technical School in 1900.

The first enrolment of 69 students were attracted to a notice in the 'West Australian' newspaper advertising classes in Chemistry, Assaying, Metallurgy, Minerology, Geology, Woodwork, Metalwork and Carving.  Art and Design classes for mechanical drawing were also offered, all at a 'moderate fee'. 

Classes were held in the old Perth Boys’ School and a number of galvanised iron structures on St George's Terrace. 

Evening Classes Commence

The year 1901 saw the commencement of evening classes, and by 1904, the school had an enrolment of 384 students.  The following year the College began an affiliation with the University of Adelaide.

In 1914 the University of Western Australia (UWA) commenced classes on behalf of the University of Adelaide, therefore eliminating the need for some classes to be held at Perth Technical School.  Some night classes continued and student enrolment numbers continued to climb.

A strong affiliation and a strong professional brotherhood remained between UWA and Perth Technical School, primarily due to the loan of equipment from the School's Department of Botany to the University.

Overcrowding and the Depression

During the next 30 years, the School faced many problems, including staffing shortages during the Depression, overcrowding and dilapidated buildings.

The year 1950 saw the Perth Technical School servicing its students in many different areas. 

The College incorporated the Perth Boys’ School in James Street, a property that fronted onto Mounts Bay Road, and the Junior Technical School in Newcastle Street. 

The post-war period also saw the introduction of many new courses associated with aircraft industry and automotive work to cater for ex-servicemen who had developed expertise in these fields.

Shaping the future of education in WA

In 1962 the Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT) was formed as another arm of ‘Perth Tech’ and the departments of Mechanics and Physics were moved to this site in Bentley.  In 1967 the campus became an autonomous body, offering associateships and post-graduate diploma courses.

Central TAFE has played a significant role in the formation of the University of Western Australia, the Leederville Technical College, the Wembley Technical College (now both Central TAFE campuses), the Technical Extension Service, the Carlisle Technical College and Curtin University.

The Central Metropolitan College of TAFE formed

The College became the Central Metropolitan College of TAFE in 1990 following the amalgamation of colleges at Perth, Leederville, Wembley, Mt Lawley, the Claremont School of Art and the WA School of Nursing.

In 1996 legislation was passed giving all Western Australian TAFE Colleges autonomy from the WA Department of Training – devolving the entire TAFE system in WA.

With the incorporation of the Skills Development Centre (now the Centre for Business Solutions), the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Centre at East Perth (now eCentral) and Subiaco, Central TAFE became the largest TAFE college in the State, and one of the largest in Australia.

We are proud of the considerable role the College has played in shaping the State’s cultural and educational history and will continue to build a sustainable future, based on the philosophy of education and training designed to meet the needs of customers and key stakeholders.

A New Era - Central Institute of Technology if formed

The 23 October 2009 signalled a starting point towards a new era for Central as it forged a new path in the rapidly changing world of training. This was the time where Central TAFE, transitioned to Central Institute of Technology. 

The evolution to Central Institute of Technology represented a new direction for the College as it was given increased autonomy and flexibility to meet the skill needs of the State.

Roleystone mum Helen Paik was the proud recipient of the awards for Vocational Student of the Year and the High Achiever at the 2008 Central TAFE Awards, inspiring judges with her commitment to excellence in the face of adversity.

A mature age student, Helen has overcome many personal battles to achieve her life long ambition to become a nurse.

Helen completed her studies and went on to take up a sought after position with Fremantle Hospital  where she undertook training as an Anaesthetic Nurse, through their graduate enrolled nursing program. She is currently working in aged care as an enrolled nurse with Amana Living to fulfil her goal to contribute to the continuous improvement of the quality of life for older people.

“I feel very privileged to have been given the opportunity to study and pursue a career in nursing,” she said.

“I am also very proud to be able to prove that age is indeed not a barrier to studying and becoming a nurse!

“The rigorous learning requirements of my Central TAFE course pushed me to lift and expand my personal levels of learning to new heights.

“I realised early in my studies that I was driven to attain the highest mark I could possibly achieve so I that I could become not just an Enrolled Nurse, but an Excellent Enrolled Nurse.”

Florence, who hails from Mauritius, impressed judges with her team and leadership skills and her dream to develop the events area within the tourism industry of her home country.

During her studies she has been an asset to any team she works with. As a driving force behind Central TAFE’s 2007 Cultural Week, Forence was instrumental in negotiating high level sponsorships from international companies including Air Mauritius.

In an industry where communication skills are paramount, Florence, who works part time at an events company, overcame many of the barriers faced by international students including the often insurmountable language barriers.

“It was not easy to leave my family and friends and start a new live in Perth,” she has said. “But I have learned that even in hard times I have to stay focused on my priorities. I have learned to be a winner in any circumstance.”

Better Facilities Project

Central has recently begun a series of upgrades to facilities at Perth Campus and Leederville Campus,  which are funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Better TAFE Facilities Fund.  

The funding from Better TAFE Facilities will be used to upgrade the following facilities:

• Replace airconditioning cooling towers
• Replace 4 airconditioning package units
• Replace current building management system with an open protocol system

The AMEP program is provided under the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. The aim of the program is to help migrants achieve “functional” English, that is, the basic English skills needed to settle satisfactorily in Australia and improve chances of finding a job. AMEP also provides information on the Australian way of life and advice on accessing essential services.

In the program, eligible migrants and refugees are given help with English skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The course is based on the nationally accredited Certificates in Spoken and Written English.

English can be learnt in a variety of ways:

• Full-time classes (15 hours per week) in the morning or afternoon
• Part-time classes (4 to 6 hours per week) in the day, evening or Saturday morning
• Special Focus classes which include English for Driving, Computer classes, Employment Pathways, English for First Aid and English for Maths.

To be eligible to learn English through the AMEP, migrants or humanitarian entrants need to:

• have arrived in Australia after July 1, 1991, or
• be temporary residents who hold certain visa classes, or
• have been granted permanent residence in Australia since July 1, 1991
• be 18 years or over
• register with the AMEP programme (ideally within three months of arriving in Australia)
• be interviewed when they register to see if they have functional English

Classes concentrate on improving language and literacy skills to undertake further education and training, to help seek and maintain employment or to participate in the community.

In addition, a variety of extra classes are offered and students can choose these within their allocated hours. Classes include:

• English for Driving: The English for Driving Course is to help you with the English you need to take the Learner’s Permit.  It is not a practical driving course. You will study road rules, safe driving, learner’s permit test, reporting accidents and the law.
• English for First Aid: You will learn CPR, dealing with broken bones, snake bite and general first aid in a range of practical activities. The First Aid Certificate is recognised in workplaces.
• Employment Pathways: Learn about writing resumes, job application letters, Occupational Health and Safety, Work Place Agreements, interview techniques, Australian English in the workplace.
• Computer classes: Whatever your level of English and computer skills, there is something to be learned in these classes. Experienced teachers give personal assistance to help develop your computer skills.
• English for Maths: You may be confident in your calculating skills but unable to express these concepts in English. This class will help with future studies or employment which need maths skills, or even to help you with your child’s maths homework.

Counsellors

The program has the services of experienced counsellors who can assist you in various ways:

• General counselling – learning difficulties, managing work and study, personal problems
• Support counselling for victims of torture and trauma
• Interviews for students to establish pathways for achieving vocational and academic goals
• Referral to external support services

Independent Learning Centre

As well as having access to Central's Library, AMEP students can visit the Independent Learning Centre (ILC) to study independently. English language teachers can help locate resources and answer questions related to English language learning.

There are books, CDs, DVDs, audio tapes and computer program for self study from beginner to advanced level.

Migrant Pathways into Employment

The AMEP’s Migrant Pathways into Employment courses are designed to assist students obtain employment in a range of sectors including Mining, Community Services and Science.

The courses are typically 6 months in duration and include English support and, in some cases, field placement.

Translations

Eligible clients can have fee-free translations of certain documents necessary for settlement in Australia – birth certificates, marriage certificates, educational qualifications, employment references.

Volunteers help by providing opportunities for extra conversation in small groups, a valuable way for newly arrived migrants to learn more about Australia and share their settlement experiences.

Volunteers can also help in classes where there is low literacy and oracy. The lecturer will plan the lesson and the volunteer can assist by following the lecturer’s directions to help individuals or groups.

The CSGP currently runs as a one-year pilot with a strong focus on evaluation and trialling of different service models. During the 2008-09 pilot year of the CSGP, Central offers courses to cater for the specific needs of the clients which include low English proficiency, a lack of formal education, difficulty performing within a formal testing regime and little or no experience with computers. The course is FREE to all eligible clients.

Central is the first point of contact for clients requiring support services.  Central is responsible for:

• assessing the eligibility of the clients to sit for the test
• identifying those clients who are not required to sit the test
• assessing the needs of the client, particularly those with limited English language proficiency
• registering the application on the Grants Online Form (GOLF) and ensuring that all fields are correctly completed 
• providing advice on the nature of the test and eligibility for a Standard Test and an Assisted Test
• provision of information and referrals to other services which may assist clients to prepare for the test
• provision of interpreting services where English language proficiency is low

'Protect' recognises that the infection is not as severe as originally envisaged. The disease is mild in most cases, severe in some and moderate overall. The overwhelming majority of patients are making a rapid and full recovery.

Key elements of the new phase include:

• A focus on early detection and treatment of people who may be vulnerable to severe outcomes.
• Identification and early treatment of those with moderate or severe disease, especially in people with respiratory difficulty.
• Control of outbreaks through testing and treatment in institutional settings, such as special schools, residential aged care facilities and prisons.
• Voluntary home isolation for those with mild disease with supportive treatment only, such as over the counter medication. Antiviral therapy will not be provided to these patients or their household contacts, unless they belong to vulnerable groups or are in institutional settings. Contacts will not be placed into quarantine.

Measures specific to Western Australia

As part of the new phase, the WA Department of Health has advised the following will now apply in Western Australia:

• Contacts of confirmed cases will not routinely be placed in quarantine.
• Voluntary school exclusion policy will no longer be applied.
  From Thursday 18 June 2009, children do not need to be kept home from school for seven days after visiting areas where swine flu is prevalent. However, parents are urged to keep children at home if they are unwell to protect their class mates from illness.
• The Department of Health will no longer routinely close schools if students are found to have human swine influenza.
• People with mild flu-like symptoms do not need to go to a doctor or hospital or to be tested for human swine flu. By staying home and resting until well, most people will recover by themselves within a few days.

Preventative tips for staff and students

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
• Place used tissues straight in the rubbish bin.
• Use alcohol gel and similar handwash products, particularly if you have extensive contact with the public.
• Wash and dry your hands often, especially after sneezing or coughing.
• If you are sick, stay home.

Exploiting a powerful form of online communications, podcasting for educators has become an effective way of interacting with students outside of the traditional classroom. It enables the delivery of radio-quality content that can be listened to anytime, anywhere – even when students are not connected to a computer. But before incorporating it into the curriculum, it’s important to consider some of the benefits of podcasting for educators and how others are already using the technology to improve and expand the education of their students.

Universities were the first to embrace the technology, handing out iPods to first year students and making podcasts of lectures. At the K-12 level, teachers are just starting to explore the possibilities. But podcasting isn’t just about turning classroom lectures into online audio content. Many educators are turning PowerPoint presentations into podcasts, while others are using it to provide detailed audio explanations of frequently asked questions or as a tool for students to practice their vocabulary at home. Students can also create their own podcasts to interact with instructors or other students. In short, podcasting for educators adds a new dimension to teaching by making it a "cool" interactive communication between teachers and students

The primary benefit of podcasting for educators is quite simple. It enables teachers to reach students through a medium that is a part of their daily lives. For a technology that only requires a computer, microphone and internet connection, podcasting has the capacity of advancing a student’s education beyond the classroom. 
A podcast has a news feed (known as RSS) that allows it to be catalogued in various podcasting directories like iTunes.  RSS automates the discovery and download of new podcast episodes and means that you do not have to visit a website to check for new material. Instead, a client application (e.g. a RSS-enabled web browser, iTunes, or a RSS reader application) automatically downloads a small RSS file, and by looking at that file, knows if there is anything new. If there is anything new, then it might simply alert the user, or it might automatically download new stuff (e.g. podcasts).
To subscribe to an RSS feed, right-click on the orange XML icon (  or  ) and select "Copy Shortcut" or "Copy Link Location" to copy the location URL and then paste it into your RSS reader - follow the instructions for your particular news reader. Left-clicking an RSS feed will just show you a raw XML file.
The popular directory, Podcast Alley, has catalogued over 41,000 podcasts and nearly 2million individual episodes, and iTunes U has thousands of recorded lectures from some of the world’s top universities.   In addition, the news feed allows podcatching programs like iTunes to automatically download new episodes. Once you have found the podcast you want to subscribe to, simply click its Subscribe button. There's no need manually check a website to see if there's new content; iTunes does it for you. The episode will be downloaded and waiting for you to play. Play the episodes in iTunes on your Mac or PC. To listen or watch on a mobile device, connect a handheld to your computer and copy the file to the device.

There are three kinds of podcasts. Audio podcasts are usually an MP3 file and are the most common types of podcasts. Enhanced podcasts can have images to go along with the audio. They can also have chapter markers, making it easier to skip to different portions of an episode. Enhanced podcasts are an AAC file and are not supported by all devices. Video podcasts are movies, complete with sound. Video podcasts can be in a variety of formats, but MPEG-4 is the most popular.
To capitalise on this form of online communication the college has recently purchased a number of podcasting kits that can be loaned by staff to make audio recordings of learning activities and lectures.

Full-time study

Applications for full-time study in Semester 1, 2010 open on September 4, 2009.

Application deadlines are as follows:

• 16 october 2009 for courses requiring submission of a folio
• 13 November 2009 for all other course application
• 9 December 2009 for late applications - these will incur a $75 late fee.

Full-time applications to Central TAFE can be made online at www.tafe.wa.edu.au.

Step by step instructions for completing the online form are provided covering significant dates, how to send in your supporting documentation, and how and when to pay the application fee.

Paper-based application for full-time study

A paper-based application form for full-time study will be available from this site in September.

Application forms will also be available from any Central TAFE campus or by contacting Student Services on 1300 300 822.

Complete the application form and answer all questions. If you do not, your application may be invalid. Applications must be on the official form and signed by the applicant.

Faxed applications are not acceptable. Only one application form may be submitted per applicant.

Supporting documentation

For your application to be complete you must include photocopies of:

• All academic records you have received since Year 9.
• Any graduation certificates (including TAFE awards) that you have received. If your qualifications are from overseas you will need to provide Statements of Equivalence.
• Any other results that you want taken into account.
• Written proof (e.g. group certificates) of any work experience you have done.
• If you were not born in Australia, you must supply proof of Australian (or New Zealand) citizenship or proof of permanent Australian residency.

Acknowledgement of your application

You will receive a letter acknowledging that your application has been received. Please note that this letter is not an offer of a place at Central TAFE. If you have not received this letter within two (2) weeks of submitting your application, phone the TAFE Admissions Centre on (08) 9238 2288 to check that it has been received.

Applicants will be advised of the result of their application by mail. You must bring this letter to the college when you enrol.

Part-time study

Enrolments for part-time study in Semester 1, 2010 will take place in late January/early February 2010.

Enrolments are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Please check specific enrolment times for your course as days, times and locations will vary.

Part-time students should note the following:

• Enrolments are to be made in person at the specified campus.
• On enrolment day, make sure you take all documents relevant to your academic achievements and work history and check course commencement dates.
• You need to pay all costs associated with your course at the time of enrolment. Payment by instalment plans is only available to those people who can provide proof of concession or hardship.
• Unless special entrance conditions apply, part-time students do not need to fill out an application form.

Central TAFE accredits all its award courses. These courses are then registered with the National Training Information Service (NTIS) to obtain national status. All Central TAFE's accredited courses are therefore nationally recognised.

The qualifications are:

• Advanced Diploma
• Diploma
• Certificate IV
• Certificate III
• Certificate II
• Certificate I 

Advanced Diploma
The Advanced Diploma is the highest TAFE qualification. It involves two to three years full-time or equivalent part-time study, and is about the same level as the older Associate Diploma.

It recognises the ability to apply fundamental principles and complex techniques in a wide range of contexts. Significant judgement in planning, technical or leadership functions is developed with highly specialised technical, creative or conceptual skills and accountability for your own and your work group's achievements.

Diploma
Diploma courses involve up to two years full-time study or equivalent part-time study. The Diploma is about the same level as the older Associate Diploma.

At this level, you are given broad theoretical knowledge and/or technical and creative skills at substantial depth. Analysis, judgement and planning are involved across a broad range of technical and/or management situations. Graduates at this level could be expected to work autonomously in complex technical operations or to coordinate their own work or the work of others.

Certificate IV
At this level you are developing a broad knowledge base. You learn to analyse and evaluate information and to apply the knowledge and skills to a wide variety of contexts. With this qualification you could be expected to take limited responsibility for the work of other people. The duration of the Certificate IV is usually one year full-time or equivalent part-time.

Certificate III
You learn additional theoretical knowledge and develop higher skills for solving a variety of problems. A person with this qualification would be able to use discretion and judgement in interpreting information and applying skills.

Certificate II
You move on to acquire operational knowledge in skill areas where you can apply solutions to predictable problems.

Certificate I
This first level of qualification covers training in some basic skills and routine tasks.

If so, you may be eligible for exemptions on course fees with Central TAFE.

Recipients of certain Centrelink job search allowances, and those with job seeker IDs, are eligible for course fee exemptions. 

This means that when you enrol in a training qualification you will not have to pay course fees for up to 12 months.  Please note, however, that resource fees still apply and there may be costs for some course materials and text books. 

These exemptions do not apply to commercial and Fee for Service courses, but do apply to enrolments in Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) units.

Any entrance requirements for particular courses still apply and enrolments are subject to availability.  

Applicants will be required to present proof of their entitlements at enrolment.

Central TAFE can help you use your existing skills, knowledge and experience to get a formal qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). 

And thanks to a new State Government initiative RPL is now an even more attractive option for gaining a training qualification to assist you in getting your next job. 

Recipients of certain Centrelink job search allowances and holders of job seeker ID cards will pay no fees when enrolling in RPL units.  Holders of other concessions cards will pay only 25% of standard fees for RPL units. 

Even those who are currently employed can benefit from this initiative with a 50% reduction in standard fees for RPL units.  

Standard RPL assessment processes apply and enrolments are subject to availability. 

To be eligible you will need to present proof of entitlements at enrolment.

Central TAFE manufacturing lecturer Chandra Thirumalaisamy has been recognised for his outstanding services to industry and education by receiving the prestigious Florence M Taylor award for his work promoting materials and metallurgy training.

The annual award is presented by the Institute of Materials Engineering for substantial contributions to materials science or engineering in Western Australia.

For the past nine years, Chandra has been developing, providing and promoting materials and metallurgy training at Central TAFE, within local industry and through the WA branch of Materials Australia.

His commitment to ensuring the needs of industry are met has seen him develop and update training courses to provide students with training that makes them employable.

The scope of these developments have covered areas such as metallurgy, inspection, minerals processing, condition monitoring and industry specific training requirements to meet the needs of individual companies. He also pioneered engineering studies as part of Central TAFE VET in Schools program helping to inspire a new generation of engineers.

In particular Chandra has played a vital role in the joint initiative between Materials Australia and Central TAFE to establish a Metallurgy Cadetship Program to address the training needs of industry in a period of strong economic growth and intense competition for labour.

On awarding the medal WA Branch President Dr Cathy Hewitt spoke about the support Dr Chandra has provided to the materials industry, which has been greatly affected by WA’s tight labour market.

“Chandra has always been enthusiastic about training and education both within metallurgy and the wider materials science and engineering subjects,” she said.

“He has assisted our Institute members with staff training, developing modules specifically for them as well as, more recently being pivotal in setting up a Cadetship program for Central TAFE’s Diploma in Metallurgy. He is a deserved recipient of the Florence Taylor Medal.”

Congratulating Chandra, Central TAFE Managing Director Neil Fernandes said that a close, working relationship with industry underpins all of Central TAFE’s activities.

“Chandra’s work in bringing together the materials industry and the training sector ensures that Central TAFE will continue to provide graduates who are well trained, highly skilled and sought after by employers.”

“He has also helped establish Central TAFE as a valuable business partner by developing innovative and bespoke solutions to suit the needs of the materials and metallurgy industry.”

Central TAFE is the only provider of Metallurgy training in WA due to the specific staff and facilities required.

The new 2,600-square meter Central TAFE building on Newcastle Street Northbridge is equipped with cutting edge facilities.

“The two-storey building has an industry standard printing plant and jewellery workshops, which are among the best in the country, with a multimedia and computing centre to support art, design and media studies,” Central TAFE Managing Director Neil Fernandes said. 

“These facilities, combined with an industry focus, will ensure that Central TAFE remains at the forefront of vocational training and that its graduates continue to shine in the demanding and competitive creative industries.”

Opening the building Minister Gillard said the building was a valuable addition to Central TAFE’s facilities and will boost the College’s already very high standing as a training centre in Western Australia.

 “All the occupations that this facility provides training for are important for our society.  Important as part of our productive capacity and our creative capacity and, of course in the modern age our productive capacity and our creative capacity are joined,” she said.

“The Australian Government has been delighted to support this major redevelopment project for Central TAFE in partnership with the Western Australian Government.

“The Australian Government provided a grant of over $7 million through the major capital component of the National Infrastructure Training Program, and I would like to acknowledge the West Australian Government’s contribution over $1million.

Mr Fernandes said the opening of the building marked completion of the first stage of the $67 million Central TAFE redevelopment in Northbridge.

“The Central TAFE redevelopment will create an inner city precinct for more than 26,000 students and consolidate training in the key areas of resource development, creative industries, community services and science,” he said. 

“This redevelopment is an unprecedented investment in the college’s training capability which would provide a major boost for skills training in Perth’s central business district.

“Already acknowledged as a leading provider of higher level technical training, the new facilities mean that Central TAFE will be even better placed to tackle skill shortages and meet the demands of tomorrow’s workplaces.”

The second stage of the redevelopment, due for completion in 2010, will become the cornerstone of the Perth campus and dramatically change the face of Northbridge.

Central TAFE has successfully piloted a unique 12 week fast track training program that ensures welding supervisors are certified to Australian Standards.

The course offers post trade training in welding metallurgy, process technology and Australian Standards codes and specifications, and was designed in response to industry need. 
 
Companies with staff trained to Australian Standards experience increased competitiveness in the global market, and are able to tender on large contracts that require certified supervisors. Despite this, the industry has historically experienced difficulty in booking their staff into an 18 month course.

According to Central TAFE Project Manager Bill Roberts, the mining boom has seen the educational delivery requirements of the sector change. “Many of our clients work in mining and as such, are onsite or offshore for considerable periods, making it difficult to consistently present at a longer course in Perth.”

“We needed to change what we offered to suit industry and the individual. We needed to meet industry demand and attract clients from what is now a very mobile workforce.”

“The new program runs part time, for three nights a week over a 12 week period, which suits those hoping to work away or those on shift work.”

The program first ran in 2007 with 20 students, and is continuing in Perth, in addition to being slated for roll out in the South West and Pilbara regions.

Eddy Derwort of Bradken Mining said the course participants now have increased knowledge and value to the company. “Our staff came out as different people - with a really broad base of knowledge that no other course offers. They came out as far more competent people.”

“As a result of the fast track course, we have been able to train our staff to a level where they can offer supervision and inspection of work being performed to local and international standards.”

“Central TAFE’s response to industry requirements in this regard was very impressive. They sought industry opinion to develop a course that applied modern day thinking to a course that had been unchanged for 30 years,” he said.

Central TAFE is the only College to present this training and award the certification certificate under the Australia Standard program.
 
Three experienced Central TAFE lecturers deliver the course with each one focusing on a key area; welding process technology, codes and specifications and welding metallurgy.

Central TAFE and industry also formed an examining body - a panel of industry experts - to examine applications, mark examination scripts and award certificates. This examining body ensures that Central TAFE course participants meet the requirements set in the Australian Standards.

A life long love of pearls and the drama of Wisteria Lane has seen jewellery student Michiyo Kikuchi take out the ‘Desperate Housewives’ category at the prestigious national AGR Matthey jewellery design competition.

The Central TAFE Diploma of Jewellery Design student was inspired by the emotion of the TV drama to create her winning piece, a pair of gold and pearl drop earrings.

“The program Desperate Housewives contains the whole range of emotions that exist between the negative and the positive,” said Michiyo who took three weeks to create her masterpiece.

“Nothing is what it seems to be, there is always something hidden or undisclosed. Within my earring design, the gold wires express changeable and unpredictable emotions. The earrings are quite large, which represents the quest for wealth, status and beauty that is portrayed in the program.”

“Pearls are made by living creatures who overcome the distress and irritation of the grain of sand to produce the multiple layers that give the pearl its strength and beauty,” she said.

“In my design I’ve used the pearls to symbolise how people develop through the difficulties of life.”

Michiyo’s love from pearls stems from years of working as a pearl wholesaler. She begun designing jewellery five years ago and is hoping to eventually start selling her designs.

“I’ve always loved jewellery and through studying at Central TAFE I have learned the skills and techniques to bring my ideas to life.”

The influential awards, run by Australia’s largest jewellery manufacturer AGR Matthey, recognise excellence and innovation in the area of gold design and aim to develop young talent, ensuring the availability of unique jewellery in Australia.

The awards were judged by a panel of leading Australian jewellery and design experts including Chief Executive of Shiels and Grahams Jewellers, Albert Benison; General Manager of Percy Marks, Cameron Marks; interior designer, Jean-Pierre Heurteau; Channel Seven Network Stylist Rachel Dennis; and milliner, Peter Jago.

The awards attracted more than 200 design sketches from which only 25 where selected as finalists, and provided with materials to create their designs.

Central TAFE Executive Director of Creative Industries, Julie Zappa, said that Michiyo’s achievement was a reflection of the cutting edge training provided by Central TAFE.

“Central TAFE’s new jewellery design workshops are among the best in the country and provide students, such as Michiyo, with the industry standard equipment, skills and knowledge to unleash their creativity and succeed in this competitive industry.”

Central TAFE’s jewellery design courses provide specialist training to work as a contemporary design-maker of jewellery and decorative objects and prepare students for a creative career in a small studio business or collaborative venture.

Central TAFE was well represented at the FTI 2007 WA Screen Awards with three graduates receiving recognition for their outstanding contribution to the local industry including Maziar Lahooti, who picked up the prestigious Young Filmmaker of the Year Award.

Graduates Tenille Kennedy and Renee Doring also won awards for Best Drama Production and Best Production Design respectively.

For Maziar, the win marks a pinnacle in his short but eventful career, and will further establish him as an emerging talent in the local industry.

“It’s my first win in a long series of being runner up,” said Maziar.

“I hope that it will open up possibilities for production and development funding allowing me to write and produce more work. I also hope it will assist with my application for the directors stream at the AFTRS (Australian Film, TV and Radio School).”

Since completing his Advanced Diploma of Screen, Maziar has been working extensively in the industry while developing his own projects.

“I’ve had regular work on film sets in technical departments, which is my bread and butter work and have received some money from Screenwest to write the second draft of my feature length film.  I have also completed four short films, which have screened in various festivals across Australia and have just finished my fifth short, which is currently in post production.” 

“In the future I plan to shoot a low budget feature and write another two feature scripts.”

Tenille, who won a producing award for the short film Before Closing is also planning for a future in feature films and sees her win as a step towards this goal.

“My ultimate plan is to get a WA feature into production, which will be hard work but there’s nothing like a bit of a challenge,” she said.

Like Maziar, Tenille is currently building up experience in industry while creating and promoting her own work.

“I’ve worked on shows like The Circuit, Marx and Venus and Wormwood where I’ve learnt more about how productions operate. In between, I’ve been applying these new skills to my own projects. I’m currently in post production for one short film and have another in the nationally acclaimed St Kilda Film Festival.”

Both filmmakers credit Central TAFE with giving them the skills needed to succeed in such a competitive industry.

“Going to Central TAFE I learnt how to shoot economically, which meant I was able to shoot my last project on film rather than the cheaper option of tape,” said Mazair.

“I found that I’m now working with a lot of the people who lectured me,” added Tenille.  “Their experience definitely gave me a better understanding on what to expect when starting out in industry and I got quite a few industry contacts, which has since proved useful.”

Other Central TAFE graduates where also nominated in the categories of Best Tertiary Film and Best Sound Design in the competition, which attracts hundreds of entries from around the State.

Central TAFE Managing Director Neil Fernandes has congratulated the graduates saying that their success is driving the dramatic growth of the local industry.

“Central TAFE’s commitment to industry relevant training is manifested in the success of graduates like Mazair, Tenille and Renee who are shaping an enviable future for the WA film industry.”

Central TAFE Screen qualifications provide the practical skills and knowledge to work in the production and post production of film and television productions, Students develop skills in camera operations, lighting, audio, production, animation, script writing and producing, and practice these skills by working as part of a team to produce music videos, short films and documentaries.

Central TAFE, together with the Institute of Materials Engineering Australia, has moved to stem the shortage in skilled Metallurgical Technicians by developing a Diploma in Metallurgy Cadetship program.

The Cadetship is based on a unique workplace based training model that the College has already applied to other engineering industry areas, which takes the strengths of a traditional traineeship and applies them to a higher level  paraprofessional qualification.

Greg Harris, Operations Manager of RCR Engineering and Chairman of Central TAFE’s Advanced Materials Technology Centre advisory group, was instrumental in setting up the new Cadetship and believes they will provide the vital influx of skilled employees the industry desperately needs.

“The resources boom has created a huge demand for metallurgists to work in the mineral extraction side of the industry and also in the manufacturing, maintenance and materials testing side that supplies the resources industry,” he said.

“However, in the current labour market, which has seen a growing popularity in trades, there is a shortage of front line supervisory workers who have an in-depth knowledge of processes, materials and capabilities.

“The industry sees cadetships as a way in which it can help attract new students into metallurgy at this paraprofessional level by offering a combination of employment together with an offer of fully paid training.

“Furthermore, Cadetships can offer training to current employees who have demonstrated aptitude and interest.”

The Cadetship model was developed by Central TAFE to meet the need for associate professionals and skilled technicians in engineering disciplines.

The cadet is offered a position in industry and receives on and off the job training including one day a week at Central TAFE, to qualify at the end of two years with a Diploma in Metallurgy. The employer in turn commits to training the cadet and receives an incentive payment from the Federal Government.

Cadets benefit by earning a wage, whilst learning and receive the practical workplace knowledge that they couldn’t get in the classroom and a direct experience of the employers operations, which will enhance the graduate’s value in the workplace.

Central TAFE is the only provider of Metallurgy training in WA due to the specific facilities and staff required.

“Central TAFE has a long history of providing excellent metallurgy training at the Diploma and Advanced Diploma levels,” Greg said.

“Through a longstanding MOU with the Institute of Materials Engineering Australia, Central TAFE also has the strong connections with the metallurgy industry and profession needed to keep its courses relevant and to a very high standard.”

Central TAFE Advanced Diploma of Screen student Rob Livings is one step closer to Hollywood after scoring a “Dollar Baby Deal” to turn the Stephen King short story Cain Rose Up into a short film.

The Dollar Baby Deal was instigated by the world-famous author in an effort to ‘give something back’ to aspiring film makers by allowing them to make films of his short stories for the cost of one dollar.

Rob will be adding his name to an esteemed list of directors who have taken advantage of the deal when he creates his film, which he plans to stamp as uniquely Australian.

“Cain Rose Up is the story of a boy who has been pushed too far by the pressures of school.  I’ve always been interested in stories on people who are pushed to the edge, through stress, bullying or frustration, as I find them great character study pieces” he said.

“The key thing I would like to do with this film is to make it significantly Australian by exaggerating the accents, and ensuring the school life is how it would be in Australia, rather than how it is portrayed in the story. I think this will contrast nicely with other films of Stephen King’s work.”

It took the Carramar based student more than two years, and dozens of emails, to land the once in a lifetime opportunity.

“I was given the name of a contact who I emailed on a weekly basis for about two months before going online to find other avenues. Finally, after several dead ends, I tracked down Stephen King’s assistant and got the contract.”

It’s a dream come true for Rob who has wanted to make movies since he was a kid.

“The excitement that I would get from running into a video store was significantly more than the rest of my family,” he said.

“It wasn’t until I was about 14 that I realised I could look at working in the Film and Television industry as a career. I chose Central TAFE because of its reputation in the industry and am currently in my third year and focusing on Producing.”

“In the future I would like to be directing family films, both overseas and in Australia, but for now I’m enjoying working in a variety of genres, especially documentaries, in any role that’s available.”

“I don’t see this contract as a win, I simply see it as an opportunity to show people in Australia and overseas what I can do with the material of a successful author. What I would love to come from it is the opportunity to adapt my favourite Stephen King novel, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.”

Since its launch in 1977 there have been 57 authorised Dollar Baby Deals with some directors going on to make box office hits such as The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Production budgets for the films have ranged from a few hundred dollars to upward of $60,000 and they have been shot on everything from home video to professional 35mm film.

Central TAFE’s Advanced Diploma of Screen provides the practical skills and knowledge to work in the production and post production of film and television programs. Students develop skills in direction, cinematography, production design, animation, script writing and producing. They acquire these skills by working on the job as teams producing  Super16mm films and XDCam documentaries.

Twenty one year old indigenous trainee Alisha Spurgeon was named Student of the Year at the 2008 Central TAFE Awards last night.

Alisha, pictured centre, blitzed the field to also take out the Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year and Trainee/Apprentice of the Year Awards at the annual event, which recognises and promotes student excellence.

Alisha joined Diploma of Enrolled Nursing Student, Helen Paik who won the High Achiever Award and Vocational Student of the Year Award, and Diploma of Events Management Student, Florence Dupuche, who was named International Student of the Year. 

Alisha impressed judges with her natural leadership ability and strong commitment to learning.

Following a stellar academic performance in high school, Alisha completed a Certificate III in Tourism as a trainee with the WA Visitor Centre in just seven months.

“Through my traineeship at the WA Visitor Centre I was given a fantastic opportunity to learn about my own indigenous culture and travel around the State to witness first hand the products that we are promoting,” Alisha said.

“The traineeship journey and everything I have been through has truly shaped me as a person,” she said.

“It has made me realise that I do have the capacity to be an effective ambassador for any industry that I work in, for my multicultural community and Australia.”

“I have confidence that I will achieve in everything I apply myself to. Even when the outlook is grim I can approach a task positively and give it my best shot. I am proud of where I come from, who I am and what I will achieve in the future.”   

Speaking at the presentation ceremony Central TAFE Managing Director Neil Fernandes congratulated all of the students saying that they exemplify commitment, perseverance and dedication to their study and careers.

“The nominees in this year’s awards raised the bar incredibly high and the winners’ ability to shine among such a strong field is testament to their exceptional achievements,” he said.

“At Central TAFE, we embrace excellence as a benchmark. The winners of the 2008 Central TAFE Awards are continuing this tradition, which has seen Central TAFE graduates become sought after in industry.”

Central TAFE is thrilled to be hosting the Young Originals 2008 exhibition in its Aberdeen Street Art Gallery.   The exhibition showcases the selected works of public secondary school students across the State.

It includes fashion by aspiring young designers, including a piece featuring Andy Warhol-inspired screened faces, and another made entirely of ties, and a third inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ story The Rose.

Recurrent themes include gritty streets, buskers, buildings, railway stations, graffiti/urban artwork, animé and playgrounds.

Central TAFE is helping aged care providers access vital funding by providing training in a new Federal Government program to efficiently allocate $5billion worth of subsidies to the sector.

The College was recently appointed as the sole Western Australian training provider for the Aged Care Funding Instrument (ACFI), which focuses on the care needs among residents of aged care facilities, and assesses core care needs as a basis for allocating funding.

Kate Baxter, Director of Educational Delivery at TAFE NSW Western Institute, who coordinated the ACFI, worked in collaboration with Central TAFE to ensure that it was ready for roll out.

“Given the potential impacts on funding recipients in the aged care sector, it was important that the training was delivered in a timely, effective and collaborative manner,” she said.

“In delivering this training, we developed a close relationship with Central TAFE through ‘train-the-trainer’ sessions. To date, in excess of 600 aged care staff have been trained to implement ACFI in WA,” she said.

“It’s a great example of educational institutions working in collaboration to deliver an effective and efficient transfer of knowledge and information to  industry”.

Charles Dornan, a lecturer in mining and geoscience at Central TAFE, has received national recognition for his dedication to training and the mining industry.

Charles scooped up an award for 2008 Trades and Skills Teacher of the Year in the Mineral Resources category and is one of four finalists for the ‘overall’ Australian Trades and Skills Teacher of the Year award to be announced at the Australian Training Awards on 20 November in Darwin.

 The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence (The Institute) runs the awards and is a national partnership between the Federal Government and Australian business that promotes learning, teaching and training in trades.

Brian Wexham, Chief Executive Officer of The Institute, said: 

 “We identify teachers who are able to move beyond the curriculum, meet industry standards and ensure Australia is turning out highly skilled men and women.”

Central TAFE Managing Director Neil Fernandes, who nominated Charles, said:

 “Central TAFE is very proud of Charles.  Like all great teachers, Charles is humble about his achievements and considers that he’s ‘just doing his job’.  But I know that his relationship with, and support for, his industry and students is exemplary, and I'm glad he has now received national recognition.

 “Charles has had a high level impact across the mining sector of Western Australia and in a critical skills area needed for the exploration and development of mines - which also has a national economic impact,” said Neil.

As winner of his category, Charles receives $5,000, of which $2,000 goes towards a College project in his area. 

In another achievement this year, Charles won the Central TAFE Staff Service Award in recognition of excellence of service in the field of training. 

Students with mental health and other disabilities are finding creative expression through an arts training program, Art-Links, at Central TAFE and will showcase their work at a display this month.

Marjan Martin Art-Links Coordinator says that in addition to providing students with practical arts training, the students gain a sense of personal achievement and self development.

“Art-Links is very much about creative and emotional expression that helps to improve one’s self-esteem and confidence,” said Marjan.

“The students show a lot of determination and commitment to their art endeavors, but equally they’re conquering some important personal challenges along the way too.”

This year, 50 students enrolled in Art-Links which is funded by the Department of Education and Training and currently runs at Central TAFE’s Mount Lawley campus.  The program covers drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics and digital imaging units from the Certificate 11 in Visual Art and Contemporary Craft package.

Marjan encourages members of the public to come along and support the display. 

“The pieces show what people, who are sometimes marginalised in our community, can accomplish with support and opportunity.  The students can be very proud of what they have created,” she said.

Central TAFE has teamed up with Western Australia’s premier sporting codes to offer students an exciting new way to combine their sporting talent with formal qualifications in 2009.

The College is working with the West Coast Eagles, WA Football Commission, Football West, Rugby WA and Netball WA to develop a training package which offers students a chance to improve their skills while working alongside the State's top coaches.

Students enrol in the Certificate IV in Sport (Development) at Central TAFE’s Leederville campus and are then released from their formal studies to pursue their interest in their chosen sport.

The concept for the athlete development program is based on a model of similar schemes used in the United Kingdom.

Sport and recreation lecturer Dave Evans says the first partnership was launched this year with Football West.   

“The course was embraced by students and the sporting body.  We’re going to continue this successful relationship in 2009 and expand it to include three more sporting codes,” he said.

Managing Director of Central TAFE Neil Fernandes said the expanding courses combined both practical and formal training.

“Students get to develop both their sporting and educational potential.  Our courses allow talented athletes to combine the physical rigors of physical training with their studies”, he said.

“Building these partnerships enables dedicated, young sports people to pursue their passion through the athlete development centre at our Leederville campus and access direct contact with the governing body of their sport."

The partnerships are good news for the sporting bodies too, as they reduce the drop-out rate for the sport, provide an academic pathway for future players and students can be utilised in field placement or ultimately as employees.

Kim Hannah, West Coast Eagles schools program officer, said the partnership would produce benefits for all parties involved, particularly the students.

“This is a great opportunity for students to take their passion for footy to another level and gain recognised certification."

“We look forward to sharing our knowledge with the students and getting them involved with the club,” Kim said.

Central TAFE has partnered with Outdoors WA, the peak industry body for outdoor adventure activities, to offer students a new and unique qualification in 2009.

The Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation is the only one of its kind presented by a College in Western Australia.

The qualification provides a formal opportunity for people who are passionate about ‘the great outdoors’ to translate that passion into work and a career.

It runs over one year full-time and graduates obtain a nationally recognised qualification in outdoor recreation.

Dr Derek Juan Swarts, Learning Portfolio Manager of Sport, Education and Disability Programs at Central TAFE, says the quality course has a strong emphasis on vocational placements for students to gain industry experience in a wide range of outdoor environments.

“Students will undertake outdoor activities such as canoeing, bushwalking, rock climbing, abseiling, a high ropes course and mountain biking.  In doing so, they will have contact with the experts in the business and acquire the practical skills and knowledge to work as guides, leaders or instructors in various sectors of the outdoor industry,” he said.

The course will be delivered by experienced staff at Outdoors WA, while Central TAFE will provide the formal certification.

A student team from Central TAFE’s Computer Systems Diploma course recently represented Western Australia in the inaugural Cisco Networking Academy, Australia/New Zealand Networking Skills Competition.

The competition involved a single team from each Australian State and New Zealand and was conducted simultaneously at all locations on 15th October 2008.

Central TAFE Cisco Networking Academy Coordinator, Aubrey Adams, said securing a place in the event was significant.    

“It was a win for the team just to gain the right to represent their State and participate in this competitive Trans-Tasman event - they first had to beat local teams from university and other training and education institutions”, he said.

“They came third in the competition, which reflected their high level technical networking troubleshooting skills and ability to work well as a team to remotely resolve extremely demanding network problems set up on the Cisco Systems networking test-lab in Sydney.”

The Central TAFE team was comprised of students Matthew Barnby, Matthew Hynes and Nick May.

On Wednesday 12 November, Mike Kneebone, WA Education Account Manager for Cisco Systems presented the three students with iPods as prizes.  They also won LinkSys wireless routers for their home networks and networking lab equipment for the College.

Central TAFE has been a lead WA Cisco Networking Academy since 1998 and delivers Cisco Certified Networking Associate, Cisco Certified Networking Professional, Network Security, Wireless LAN and IP Telephony training within its Diploma of Computer Systems course.

“Choose a sheet metal product and use your imagination to design an original, well articulated entry statement to Leederville campus”.

This is the challenge Central TAFE lecturer in Building Drafting and Design, Shelley Brasher, puts to students twice a year.

Partnering with the Perth office of Fielders, a national sheet metal production company, Shelley drives the bi-annual competition.

“It's an opportunity for students, all in their last year of study, to present a technical report and sample of their design work to industry and get some ‘real world’ feedback and opinion”, says Shelley.

“Similarly, industry groups get to see what sort of skills and training our students are getting."

Shelley instructs students to design a specific structure using an industry product, which is assessed by the College and people in the business.

“In this particular case, students explore metal products and think through how they can use sheet metal to shape and structure a relevant Entry Statement to their campus.

“I encourage them to consider issues of distinctiveness, something eye-catching, making a first impression and having a purpose, including social and environmental.

“Designs need to be deliberate, functional and well explained.  So, when students incorporate a given aspect, they need to explain what and why. 

“The main basis for the assessment is preparing a top quality technical report,” said Shelley.

A panel comprised of staff from Fielders and Central TAFE choose a selection of work and award various certificates.

First prize recently went to Jared Greenham.  He explains his design.

“My entry statement is constructed of VM dark grey, pre-weathered Anthra-Zinc New Generation wall cladding and five concrete tilt pillars.  It’s a visually strong and confronting structure, though a fairly a simple and lineal design,” he said.

“Whether it was accepted or rejected by the passer-by, it would be an icon of the place it represents.  The five pillars symbolise people, alertness and activity.  I made them different heights to reflect people are different.   Being ‘upright’ in structure, they also reflect consistency and things in common."

Jared said his structure was physically strong and built to last, requiring little maintenance and would hold its style for years.

‘Client feedback’ from Year 7 students at Clayton View Primary School has guided an anti-graffiti project recently completed by Diploma of Animation students at Central TAFE.

The project was funded by the City of Swan and involved four animation students creating ‘a proof of concept’ animation to use in Western Australian primary schools to discourage graffiti. 

The project was coordinated by Central TAFE’s New Media Lecturer, Tim Riessen.

“The primary students were instrumental in putting forward initial ideas for the animation - one of which was used,” he said. 

“They viewed progress and provided feedback on a site visit to our animation facilities in East Perth. 

"They learnt some of the tricky techniques to animation and were clearly enthralled - with an endless list of questions and comments.  I think their Deputy Principal was equally amazed by what could be achieved."

The final animation premiered at an end of year show for New Media students ‘e-scape’ on 20th November 20 at the College Art Gallery in Aberdeen Street.

Industry guests viewed the high quality work and the President of the Bellevue Ratepayers Association, Martin Chape, (who secured project funding) presented the Diploma students with certificates to recognise their good efforts. 

The animation now forms part of a broader teaching resource for primary schools to be piloted in 2009.

Central TAFE student, Sharon Simoen, has won two community awards in recognition of her commitment to learning and enhancing the lives of other migrants and refugees in Perth.

Sharon, originally from Burma, recently won the Western Australian (WA) Multicultural Community Service Award for 2008, having already secured the Outstanding Learner’s Award during the Adult Learner's Week in September.

She was nominated by her lecturers for the Outstanding Learner’s Award due to her ability to juggle studies and work as a bi-lingual volunteer at the Northern Metropolitan Migrant Resource Centre.

“Sharon has managed to cope with a single parent family situation, work and study commitments with incredible success,” says Anne Epanomitis, lecturer in English as a Second Language (ESL) at Central TAFE.

“She initially came to Central TAFE to study ESL in 2004 with very basic literacy skills but has worked hard to improve her English.

“She has completed all of the units of competency in the Business training package within the Wider Opportunities for Work Certificate I in Business and is now completing her Certificate II in Information Technology at our College,” she said.

The Northern Metropolitan Migrant resource Centre nominated Sharon for the WA Multicultural Award due to her inspiring efforts to support fellow Burmese migrants and refugees.

Her duties includes tasks most of us take for granted such as assisting with forms, locating medical services, attending appointments, accessing accommodation and liaising with real estate companies, government agencies and banks.

She also works with hospitals and courts as an interpreter and provides driving lessons to migrants.

Sharon speaks the ‘Chin’ dialect, which is from a village near Burma and also Burmese.  She was the first migrant in Western Australia able to speak Chin.

“The biggest barrier for migrants is the language one,” she says.

“It’s very difficult to move to a new country and not be able to communicate - especially when there is no available interpreter who knows your particular language.

“I’m able to speak Chin, Burmese and now English and am happy to share this with others to make the adjustment easier.

“Central TAFE has been important to me.  My lecturer, Anne Epanomitis, took a genuine interest and made time for me.  It started with simple tasks, but once I knew how to do something, I’d remember the next time, and I’m now in a position where I can pass all sorts of knowledge on to other migrants.

“Anne also understood my responsibilities with work and children and helped adjust my training around other activities so I could get ahead,” she said.

Sharon was presented with the WA Multicultural Award by the Hon John Castrilli MLA, Minister for Local Government, Heritage, Citizenship and Multicultural at a ceremony held at Government House. 

In 2008 Central TAFE embarked on a new and exciting mode of training for surveyors in the Goldfields and Pilbara regions without the need to travel to Perth.  Central TAFE and several large mining companies have joined forces to provide a work based training program (WBT) for surveyors that will help address the current skills shortage in the industry.

A Central TAFE surveying lecturer, flies to Kalgoolie and Newman for two days every fortnight, to provide specialised training, onsite assessment and assist with the accreditation of prior learning (RPL). While responsibility for learning still rests with the individual, each student has the opportunity for ‘one on one’ tuition with a lecturer that allows them to progress through the course at their own pace.

And what a pace it has been so far! Results have far outstripped expectations, with most students completing over half of the Certificate IV in Surveying (Mining and Engineering) in 9 months. While this progress is expected to slow once students begin second year, the opportunity for RPL increases as the skills they have gained in the workplace align better with subjects in the Diploma in Surveying (Mining and Engineering).

The concept of work based training is not new, and has been trialled successfully in the past by Central TAFE at Kambalda and Norseman. However, this is the first time that a group of mining companies have combined resources to provide the financial and logistical support to sustain a long term training commitment. While Central TAFE funds the lecturer time via student enrolment, other costs such as airfares, accommodation, car and venue hire, tuition fees are spread equally through the mining companies on a per student basis.

Central TAFE’s WBT program is sufficiently flexible to allow students to begin their studies at any time and at any level. Old and partially completed qualifications can be mapped across to the new Advanced Diploma in Surveying to ensure that all students meet the academic requirements for mining authorisation.

Central TAFE is committed to continuing with this program providing there is sufficient industry interest and enrolment to support the training costs.

Employers of child care professionals are only too aware of the skills shortage within this industry. The Federal Government’s Early Childhood Workforce Strategy aims to address this and one of its new initiatives will benefit child care centres.

The Australian Government will pay the fees of students enrolling in Central TAFE’s Diploma of Children’s Services from January 2009*.

This initiative applies to existing employees who have a Certificate III in Children's Services and want to further develop their knowledge and skills.  It could also apply to any future trainees that child care centres consider employing.

Central TAFE is offering this Diploma in a range of training modes including traineeships, training in the workplace, or on campus learning, and we will work with employers to find the best solution for their service.

The quality of our training and experience of our lecturers ensures staff not only acquire a deeper understanding of children and additional skills in the workplace, but are also exposed to and embrace the ‘best practice’ principles of this profession.

Global earth moving and tyre management company Otraco is one of the latest businesses to benefit from a Central TAFE program that identifies and builds on the skills, knowledge and experiences of existing employees.

The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program involves assessing an employee’s job skills, onsite in their workplace, and accrediting them against a formal qualification.

The assessment also helps employeers identify any important gaps in skill sets and offers solutions for addressing them, such as additional training to complete a wide variety of qualifications.

Business and Management RPL Coordinator Frances Gallagher has been working with Otraco at their Bentley premises.

“Otraco has a diverse group of staff involved with the program," Frances said.

"It includes administration specialists, front-line managers and human resource professionals, who are all heading towards different qualifications ranging from a Certificate III in Accounting to a Diploma of Business Management."

“We have various ways of establishing staff levels of competency to award the qualifications. They can include written documents, existing qualifications, interviews and work samples.”

The program benefits both employers and employees as it improves morale, raises job awareness and reduces the need for employees to be replaced. Employees are assessed at their workplace, keeping costs down and ensuring minimum disruption for employers.

For Otraco Training Manager, Ryan Bott the benefits are extensive.

“From an employer point of view, this program provides a recognised skilled workforce and helps develop good employee relationships," he said.

"Also, with the impact of the current skills shortage on the ability to attract staff, a program like this demonstrates a commitment to continual staff development, which has established Otraco as an employer of choice."

Otraco Business Administrator Sandra Meade believes it is a great way to get a credible qualification out of years of practical experience.

Central TAFE’s first Academic Scholarship winners have been officially welcomed to the College by Managing Director Neil Fernandes.

The inaugural scholarships are the first stage of an ongoing commitment to open up opportunities to study at Central across the community.

The scholarships were open to Year 12 students who were undertaking a Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Schools program through Central TAFE in 2008.

The three winners, who have now begun full time study at Central TAFE, were presented with their certificates at a morning tea held at the Central TAFE Art Gallery. 

Scholarship recipient Alexandra Peters from Willetton is commencing a Diploma of Events.  News of her scholarship win came just as she was about to set off and pay her course fees.

“I was literally just about to leave to go and pay my course fees when the call came in announcing that I had been granted the scholarship”, she said.

With a sporty background that has involved swimming, football and netball, Alexandra would ultimately love to one day be involved in organising major sporting events.

The scholarships were for full time courses commencing in 2009.  Each scholarship is valued up to $5,000 and includes enrolment fees, resource fees, and $500 towards texts.

The scholarship applications were assessed not just on academic potential but included criteria such as personal achievement, ability to meet challenges and personal attributes. 

The winners all demonstrated a commitment to excellence beyond the classroom walls.

Siobhan Aspinall, who also secured a scholarship place to study a Diploma in Events, hopes to one day organise large musical festivals.

“I’d love to organise a national, mobile event that tours the nation such as the Big Day Out.   It would be fantastic to combine travel with event management,” she said.

The third winner of a scholarship was Valentina Chionis from Maddington.  Valentina is on course to become a teacher. 

Her scholarship will enable her to complete a Certificate III Teacher Assistant qualification before going on to complete a Bachelor of Education at university.

“My coach had completed a Diploma of Events through a traineeship and she knew I was interested in following a similar career,” said Alexandra.

“She advised me on which subjects to pursue and was very helpful in guiding me through TEE subjects and the wide range of event management opportunities.”

Academic success at Willetton contributed to Alexandra’s successful scholarship application.  She was awarded the ‘Caltex Best All Rounder Award’ which recognises excellence in academic, leadership, sporting and community service activities.

She also recently received an ‘Award of Excellence’ from the Curriculum Council which is awarded to students who receive more than 10 grade ‘A’s for their subjects.

She also recently received Certificates of Distinction from the Curriculum Council for both Reception and Customer Service and Aspects of Tourism.  Certificates of Distinction are awarded to students who are in the top 0.5 per cent of students for Year 12 subjects.

“The teaching experience I gained as part of the VET in Schools program was a perfect way of making sure if it was the right profession for me.”

Valentina’s commitment and enthusiasm were officially recognised during her time at school.

At graduation, she received a special ‘Youth Ministers Positive Image Award’ that recognises individuals who have promoted a positive image of young people, both at school and in the wider community.

She also received a Personal Excellence Award in recognition of academic achievement, rational enquiry and integrity.

On completion of her Central TAFE scholarship, Valentina plans to attend Edith Cowan University to undertake a Bachelor of Education.

Ultimately, she hopes to teach underprivileged children overseas.

Central TAFE has signed up as an Event Sponsor for the 2009 National Disability Services Support Worker Awards that are being held at Burswood on 20th February.

This inaugural event aims to officially recognise the outstanding contribution made by support workers in enhancing the lives of people with disabilities.

The awards are being hosted by National Disability Services WA (NDS WA) with support from the Disability Services Commission. 

NDS is a national industry association for disability services, representing over 600 not-for-profit organisations.  It promotes the development of quality services and life opportunities for Australians with disabilities.

Managing Director Neil Fernandes is pleased Central TAFE has an opportunity to be associated with such a worthy event.

“The support workers working quietly behind the scenes in the disability sector are some of the ‘silent heroes’ making invaluable contributions to the community.

What qualification did you study at Central TAFE and when did you finish?

I went straight from high school to Central TAFE and did a 3 year Diploma in Art & Design, majoring in film and television and graduating in 1996. The courses are run differently now at Central.  It is run more like a film school than an art school, which I think is excellent! It allows students to make earlier decisions on their chosen field within film & television, be it a cinematographer, director, producer, editor etc. It also better prepares the students for working in the industry.  It is teaching so much more than just how to make films.

What did you think of the facilities you recently saw at Central TAFE?

The facilities at Central TAFE are fantastic; I would say world class even.  The main production studio is very well equipped.  The post production facilities such as the edit suites and sound mixing rooms are just like what is being used in much of the Australian film and television industry.

I am also particularly impressed with the production value of the recent student films at Central TAFE. I think the standard of work is quite high.

I think it is fantastic that the students get to shoot projects on Super 16 film. Film is the international industry-standard format for feature films, as well most overseas television drama. It is rare for students to get the opportunity to work with film now that the digital formats are becoming more and more prevalent.  If you are able to shoot and work with film, then you will be able to work in any format that you come across out there.  It doesn’t work the other way around.

What I mean by this is that the principals of filmmaking are the same whichever format you shoot in.  However, shooting film requires a different approach, both technically and creatively.  These principles can be applied to shooting digital, but shooting film requires a greater understanding of lighting and exposure.

The digital equipment at Central TAFE is of a standard and quality that will enable the graduates to go out into the industry and understand pretty much the workings of any other piece of equipment they will come across. There is no reason why the quality of the student projects can’t match the high quality of professional projects because the equipment they are using is the same.

I am also particularly impressed with the production value of the recent student films at Central TAFE. I think that the standard of work is quite high.

What was the first break or job that was key to setting you on your way in your career?

I have had a number of breaks I guess and many of them lead onto one another. A series of fortunate events you might say, but if I was to think of one particular big break it was one night when I had just finished editing my new cinematography showreel. (A showreel is like a portfolio of work, a cut down of my best cinematography edited to music.)

Just as I had finished, an email came through to me that was forwarded by someone that I barely knew. The email said that a German production company was looking for an Australian cinematographer to shoot part of an international film that was to screen at the World Expo in Hanover, Germany and they wanted to see showreels.

I went to the post office the next morning and sent mine off express mail. I received a phone call only days later confirming that I had the job.  I was flown to Melbourne and I worked with a full professional crew on what was my first major job.

The people I met on that project liked my work so much that I got a call a month later and they flew me to Frankfurt to shoot some commercials. I eventually returned to Australia with a new and improved showreel.  Having international work on the reel raised my profile further and got me bigger and better jobs and an agent and I was away…

A case of the right timing I guess!

What qualities do you think are needed in order to make a career in the creative industries?

The quality that I admire in successful creative professionals is the ability to take pride in one’s own work.  Whatever your creative pursuit, I think that if you are doing work that you really enjoy and that you take great pride in, then you’re lucky enough to have one of the best jobs in the world.

I also think that challenging oneself by working outside of your comfort zone is important and realising that to succeed you have to be consistent, positive and work really hard.

Whichever creative field you are in, it is going to be a hard slog to get your career underway. With creative careers you are judged on your body of work and your track record. The first thing one needs to do is create a portfolio, or in my case a showreel, and then prepare yourself for criticism and knock backs, never giving up and use those knock backs as incentive to work harder and set your standards higher.

I also think it is important to do ‘passion projects’ that allow you to experiment with ideas or further your experience. By passion projects, I mean ones that you do for the love of it and not the pay. I shot a lot of ‘freebies’ to get my showreel up to scratch and to get experience before I started getting paid for my art.

Also it’s important to work on your network of contacts.  You never know when that person you might consider as a rival might actually be the one to pass some work your way or introduce you to new collaborators. The film industry is too small to make enemies.  We should be like a support network and learn from each other in order to continually make better projects.

For you, what are the 'must see' benchmark films in terms of either outstanding or pioneering cinematography?

Well for starters the cinematography on the recent Australian feature films The Black Balloon and the soon to be released The Waiting City are quite outstanding. Ha!

No, seriously, some of my favourite and most influential films in terms of cinematography are not the ones with the big crane shots or the world’s longest steadicam shot, but the ones that create a real mood and atmosphere.  Films that convey emotion to an audience and help to communicate the subtext of a story by saying more about the characters than dialogue alone ever could.

I think the most influential films for me would be anything directed by David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac, Benjamin Button) for his use of mood, atmosphere and cinematic techniques of storytelling.

Also, classics such as Citizen Cane. It took me a while to realise why it is considered the best film ever made. The use of deep focus in this film is not just a technical achievement, but also a storytelling one.

I also really liked The Constant Gardener and Babel. They are both quite rough and hand held at times, but very beautiful and you really felt like you were ‘inside’ the movie.

That is what I was trying to create on the most recent film that I shot, The Waiting City.

I want the audience to feel like they were there in Kolkata, India with the characters, to feel it, smell it and taste it.

Former Central TAFE student Denson Baker recently took some time out from his busy schedule as a cinematographer to return to the college and teach current students the finer points of his craft.

Denson, formerly of the Kelmscott/Roleystone district and now based in Sydney, already has an impressive body of work behind him. 

He was the cinematographer on The Black Balloon starring Toni Collette which won an array of awards including one for ‘Best Film’ at the 2008 Australian Film Institute Awards.

He completed a Diploma in Art and Design majoring in film and television at Central TAFE in 1996. 

Gradually building his career shooting commercials and short films, Denson soon built up an impressive showreel and now works on major motion pictures.

Denson met with students currently completing an Advanced Diploma of Screen.  He ran a workshop illustrating different camera techniques, filters, uses of lighting and all the details that combine to convey the emotion of a scene.

Interviewed following a screening of The Black Balloon and Q & A with students, Denson was impressed with his former college and the range of technical equipment available.

Central TAFE and the Master Builders Association have joined forces to foster new training opportunities and enhance the skill profile of the Western Australian building industry.

The two parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which covers a commitment to collaborate on delivering high quality vocational education and training to the industry.

Formed in 1898, the Master Builders Association of Western Australia (MBAWA) is a leading employer association in the building and construction industry. MBAWA is part of Australia's oldest industry association, Master Builders Australia.

Recognising the specialist skills of both organisations, the collaboration aims to develop new training programs that are specifically tailored to ever evolving industry requirements.

Both parties have agreed to promote each other’s capabilities and work in unison in forums and activities to increase industry awareness of the benefits of training.

Master Builders Association Executive Director Michael McLean believes Central TAFE is the right match for them, sharing common goals.

“Central TAFE share Master Builders’ vision that the building and construction industry deserves a first class range of training courses tailored to the needs of builders and specialist contractors,” said Mr McLean.

“Entering into a strategic alliance with Central TAFE will complement the Association’s training program perfectly.”

In addition to promoting learning opportunities for building industry students, the five year MOU will include support of scholarships and exchange programs.

On Friday 6 and Sunday 8 March, Central TAFE’s East Perth campus (eCentral) will be hosting two special events in support of International Women’s Day 2009.

The site at 140 Royal Street, East Perth will be the headquarters for seminars, workshops, exhibitions and activities.

International Women’s Day draws women together in unity and friendship to commemorate past achievements and highlight current social, economic and political issues. It also provides the opportunity to develop networks and facilitate partnerships between women, organisations and the broader community.

The 2009 theme of ‘Sharing the Caring for the Future’ will focus on the contribution of women in their caring roles, and explore the strategies needed to share the responsibility for caring across our community.

On Friday 6 March there will be a public symposium on ‘Sharing the Caring for the Future’ from 9am to 1pm.  The public expo on Sunday 8 March will include presentations, workshops and exhibition stalls from 10am to 3pm.  The day will also involve live entertainment and a celebration of the contribution Indigenous women make to the community.

Central TAFE’s state of the art print building recently played host to ‘Pinnacles of Print’ a special event highlighting some of the ground breaking digital innovations in the printing industry.

Printing Industries Association of Australia (PIAA), in conjunction with Central TAFE and Océ Australia, one of the world’s leading suppliers of professional printing and document management systems, hosted the event held on 10 March.

The event was part of a continuing relationship Central TAFE has with the printing industry, having last year hosted the PIAA AGM and the 2008 Australasian Association of Printing Teachers' Conference.

Sydney based print industry heavyweight Andy McCourt was a key note speaker, who contrary to some gloomy forecasting, outlined how printing in Australia is a growth industry employing over 100,000 Australians and set to become a ten billion dollar industry by 2012.

Andy is the former editor of the national journal Print 21 and has over 25 years experience in the graphic art industry and regular contributes to publications and conferences across the globe.

Although clearly changing the printing world rapidly, Andy said that the age of the internet is actually helping print find new markets.

He outlined how the successful businesses were embracing technology breakthroughs and continuing to evolve in an increasingly digital environment.  This includes the rapid increase in use of websites for direct marketing and the enormous growth in all forms of digital output.

PIAA State President John Stangeland followed Andy and spoke of the importance of graphic art students picking up new skills through the careers and becoming print media ‘all-rounders’.

“Printing has been with humanity for around 600 years and is interwoven in the fabric of society. It is changing for sure, but will always be with us for information, news, entertainment, commerce, packaging, decoration and leisure”, he said.

The presentations also illustrated how the digital print arena was making great strides in terms of sustainability and reducing carbon footprints.  There is no longer a need to pulp large numbers of unsold material.  Printers have introduced digital short run printing and in some instances only print after a sale has actually been made. 

Following the presentations, Andy McCourt gave Central TAFE students free access to a learning tool on colour and ink. He also gave students a condensed version of the presentation given to the industry representatives.

Following a tour of Central TAFE’s facilities, the two speakers and Océ representatives expressed admiration for the standard of work Central TAFE’s Certificate III Printing and Graphic Arts students were producing.

Mr McCourt added that the Central TAFE Graphic Arts training facilities were amongst the best he had seen.

Central TAFE has been rewarded for its pioneering training program developed with China’s Tianjin Engineering Technical Institute (TJETI) by receiving a prestigious Teaching Outcome Award from China’s Ministry of Education.

Awarded ‘First Class’ position in the regional Teaching Outcome Category, TJETI and Central TAFE were competing with over a 100 universities and colleges in the region alone.

At TJETI, Central TAFE has developed a ground breaking model of education for a Diploma in Engineering (Oil and Gas) qualification.

The unique curriculum design brought in industry groups who have direct input into the training to ensure graduating students have the precise skills they are looking for.

When the course was launched in 2005 the Institute had five industry groups as partners.  This rapidly escalated to nine industry groups and has now peaked at 15 with many more queuing up to be involved. 

The sheer size of the Chinese education system means that the winning of such awards is a great achievement.

Tianjin is the sixth largest city in China with a population of over 11 million people. TJETI has over 8500 students with over 400 full time students currently taking the diploma.

The provincial and national awards are very prestigious and highly valued by institutions throughout China as it gives them higher status within the education system.  It also enables them to promote themselves as institutions of excellence

Although based in the heart of China, the course is delivered and assessed in English. 

For the first year the students have over 1000 hours of intensive English tuition, with a lean towards all the terminology used in the engineering world.

Central TAFE staff visit periodically to deliver specific units and skill sets. This includes training the local staff in Training and Assessment skills. 

Remarkably, the qualification brings with it a 100% guarantee of a job.  Without fail, the graduating students are all selected by the associated employers and receive good salaries for their sought after expertise.

The regional Department of Education is so pleased with the program and the employment outcomes that it has requested the annual intake of 100 students be elevated to 200.

The partnership was the only joint program to win an award and the two institutions are now in the pipeline for the national awards in 2010.

Central TAFE continues its great reputation for creative industry training with graduate film students winning a prize at the recent WA Screen Awards held at The Octagon Theatre, UWA.

Students from the Advanced Diploma of Screen program took out the honours for ‘Best Tertiary Film’ for their movie ‘Shades of Grey’.  It was a great team effort with the students facing strong competition from all the WA universities.

Two of the four nominees for the award were student films produced at Central TAFE by Advanced Diploma of Screen graduates.  Both were ensemble efforts with the class of students contributing to all aspects of the production.

The WA Screen Awards have been running since 1996 to celebrate excellence in film and television production.  The win continues Central TAFE’s recent strong showing at the industry prize night.

In 2008, Central TAFE graduate Maziar Lahooti won ‘Young Film Maker of the Year’ honours. Graduates Tenille Kennedy and Renee Doring also won awards that year for Best Drama Production and Best Production Design respectively

Laura Botha, the student Producer of Shades of Grey, gave a very graceful acceptance speech on behalf of the filmmakers.  She acknowledged the support and help received by the students from lecturers and industry mentors in the Central TAFE Media Portfolio.

Laura has continued pursuing her passion for screen and is currently working as a Junior Agency Producer at Gatecrasher Advertising.

Central TAFE Managing Director Neil Fernandes has congratulated the graduate winners saying that their success is helping drive the dramatic growth of the local industry.

“Central TAFE’s commitment to industry relevant training is reinforced by accolades such as this and our courses remain a great foundation for those wishing to enter this competitive industry,” he said.

Training and Energy Minister The Hon Mr Peter Collier made his first visit to Central TAFE on April 30 and was impressed with the facilities and passion of both students and lecturers alike. 

His first port of call was the Oral Health Centre of WA (OHCWA), the state of the art dental facility Central TAFE shares with UWA and Curtin University. 

OHCWA continues its unique role in providing dental services to eligible members of the public, whilst ensuring that students have access to a suitable pool of patients to develop their skills and aptitude.

Mr Collier was joined on the tour by Member for Nedlands, Mr Bill Marmion.

OHCWA staff members Liz Cunningham and Margaret Starr lead the Minister through the facility to see the kind of training Central TAFE delivers in the fields of Dental Technology and Dental Assisting.

The visit concluded with a walk through the OHCWA Ground Floor Dental Hospital Clinics.  These impressive, open plan facilities have 60 independent dental treatment areas that can all operate simultaneously.

Minister Collier was also given a guided tour of Central TAFE’s engineering facilities and laboratories at the Subiaco campus. 

The lecturers led the Minister through demonstrations on Non-Destructive Testing,   Fluid Channel Flow and a Tensile Test experiment.  He was also shown Central TAFE’s unique testing facilities that provide invaluable information to some of the biggest resource companies in the country.  

Dr Paul Hugget, Executive Director of Materials Solutions P/L showed the Minister some of the pioneering breakthroughs Central TAFE have been involved with in the protection of drill teeth technology.

The State Government has taken a major step forward to support Western Australians affected by the economic downturn by establishing a rapid response unit to provide immediate training and career alternatives for retrenched workers.

Training Minister Peter Collier said the TAFE Response Unit (TRU) would use the expertise of training professionals, who could be mobilised quickly to assist employees and industries affected by workplace redundancies.

Two Central TAFE Photography students have been formally presented with the Monart Scholarship, generously donated by Mona Ketelsen of Monart Studio and Gallery in Dalkeith.

Mona was formerly a Central TAFE Fine Art student herself, studying at Claremont School of Art and then Central TAFE’s new building at 12 Aberdeen Street, Northbridge.

Finding her training fulfilling and invaluable for her own artistic career, Mona decided to support a student from the graphic design or photography portfolio.

After an intensive interview process Natalie Blom from East Perth, a student in the Diploma of Photography, was chosen as the successful scholarship recipient. 

However, Mona was also very impressed with the work of another Advanced Diploma student, Krysia Cant from West Perth, so she decided to extend the scholarship to two students!

The scholarships mean that these two students will have their tuition and resource fees covered until the end of their courses.  Following graduation, Mona looks forward to offering further guidance as they map out their respective careers in the arts.

“They are both very talented individuals working hard, balancing work and study and it is a privilege for me to be part of their journey towards a career in photography”, she said.

Natalie hopes to combine her already acquired graphic design skills with photography, in order to get a job with a website developer or publishing house.

Krysia's ultimate dream is to work for National Geographic magazine.

As well as running a contemporary fine art gallery, Mona also takes groups on fine art photography tours through the ancient streets of her birthplace, Egypt.

Central TAFE Animation Lecturer Todd Millias, from Golden Bay, has won a grant to produce an animated short film for first run broadcast on Nickelodeon Australia.

His proposal, a short film called ‘The Geeks’, beat off stiff competition from a range of independent submissions for the ‘Nick Shorts’ prize.

Film and Television International (FTI), ScreenWest and Nickelodeon join forces each year to present the Nick Shorts’ award. 

This initiative invites Western Australian individuals or animator teams to produce one to three minute animations that should be suitable to be broadcast as a ‘stand alone’ product. 

The film also needs the potential to be developed into a long-form animation series with international appeal.

The finished product must be suitable for a Nickelodeon audience and be eligible for a G classification.

Since winning the award in the latter half of 2008, Todd’s production company, David Downie Film Productions, have been hard at work on storyboards and script development. 

The project was originally called ‘The Nerds’ but had to be changed for the potential USA audience where the term has a slightly different connotation. 

The film has to be completed by the end of July.  This will be no mean feat.  To create one minute of animation takes almost 2000 separate frames. Animators create about 30 seconds worth of animation per week.

Todd’s project will be 6 weeks of animation for a 3 minute film, followed by a month of post production work.

Once it’s finished, ‘The Geeks’ will be put forward to represent WA and its film funding bodies for consideration for a cartoon series by Nickelodeon, where it can potentially reach a global audience.

Year 12 media students in Western Australia are invited to demonstrate their flair in a new competition being run by Central TAFE.

The Media Review Awards are open to all Year 12 Media Production and Analysis students.

Submissions are invited in three categories:

• audiovisual such as music video or animation
• radio including documentary, current affairs or news, and
• photography.

Applications close at 5pm, 25 September 2009.

Productions must have been completed in 2009 with all elements of the work created by the entrants.

A completed entry form needs to be attached to each submission. Full competition requirements are contained in the entry form.

You never know which doors will open for you following training at Central TAFE.  Former student Joanne Shannon has gone from part time study in Public Relations to the highest office in the State, working as Senior Media Advisor to the Premier, the Hon Colin Barnett.  Joanne kindly agreed to a answer some questions on her time here and subsequent career path.

How did you start your career in PR/Media?

Working as a Clerk at an engineering company my first year out of school, I saved enough cash to fund a trip through Europe. I met a fellow traveller who worked in the Public Relations Department at Disney. Aside from the obvious delights that come from working for Disney, PR sounded like a career I could get into.

On my return to Perth, I looked in to courses at Central TAFE. I didn’t want some fancy title after my name; I just wanted the skills for the job. I completed my Diploma of Public Relations part-time, while working full-time at a direct marketing company. I learnt from people with real industry experience. People with amazing stories from their careers that I still reflect on to this day.

How did your TAFE qualification help you with your career?

My TAFE qualification, along with a lot of hard work, has led me to the Office of the Premier, Colin Barnett where I work as Senior Media Adviser.

What are your main responsibilities as Senior Media Advisor to the Premier?

I keep the Premier up to date on the issues running in the major newspapers, radio news, talkback and online. I plan media opportunities and interviews and liaise with journalists all day. After 18 years in politics the Premier has a pretty good idea how to handle the media but I like to think I give him a few tips every now and then.

Would you recommend TAFE to someone wishing to follow your chosen career path?

TAFE is a great starting point for anyone wanting to get into PR. Good luck!

New students and staff at Central TAFE will soon have a brand new service for communication and collaboration following the decision to select Microsoft’s Live@EDU solution.

The new service will not just change the way groups of students communicate with each other and staff. It has the capacity to revolutionise some of the ways work and projects are handled and delivered across all portfolios.

Microsoft Live@EDU provides a simple, practical way to provide advanced online communications and collaboration for everyone at Central TAFE.

The software provides hosted email, calendars, online workspaces, mobile alerts, document sharing, instant messaging, blogs, videoconferencing, mobile access and address books.  All of which is accessible on Windows, Mac, Linux and mobile devices.

The Live@EDU suite of innovative online applications and services includes Microsoft Outlook Live, Microsoft Office Live Workspace and SkyDrive storage.

“Microsoft’s Live@EDU platform was exactly the solution we were looking for to meet the growing needs of our students. We will be introducing a multi-purpose online offering, that streamlines the way we work and communicate and enables instant connectivity and collaboration right across our campuses,” said Managing Director Neil Fernandes. 

We currently have around 1000 students about to commence the pilot use of Live@EDU commencing in Semester 2, 2009. The pilot group will provide extensive feedback on the suitability of Live@EDU as the application of choice for Central TAFE.

Central TAFE Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design student Catriona Lamb of Beechboro has been selected as the winning designer for a ground breaking sustainability project in the medical world. 

Two General Practitioners, Dr Richard Yin and Dr George Crisp, were in search of a way of promoting sustainability within General Practice.

“Many GP’s are practising and living sustainably as the climate change issue has some profound health implications both globally and within Australia.  There are many GPs making significant changes. Unfortunately their efforts are often invisible.  So we were searching for a method of making their contribution visible,” said GP Richard Yin.

Students were given a brief to devise a strategy to brand Richard and George’s project and extend its ‘green’ messages to the community. Students needed a solution that could link sustainable practices together under common branding. 

The essential deliverables were an identity (either logotype or symbol), stationery design, certificate and exterior signage.  They were also allowed to come up with any additional promotional application they felt could deliver the message of sustainability effectively within a practice.

Following a review of a great range of ideas from the students, Catriona’s work was chosen by the doctors as the winning design.

Both doctors were very impressed with the variety of ideas generated and they are keen to launch the new branding and incorporate it into a new website they are developing.

“Through this project we felt that we could make visible the individual attempts by GP’s in their practices to be sustainable and have them be part of a collective effort that would have more impact in a way that could persuade colleagues to become involved and also make a statement to our patients about our stance on this topic,” said Richard.

A passion for learning about her State and the tourism industry have paid off for 21 year old indigenous trainee Alisha Spurgeon who was named Central TAFE's 2008 Student of the Year.

The Yanchep student also landed the titles Apprentice/ Trainee of Year and Aboriginal/ Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year after impressing judges with her natural leadership ability and strong commitment to learning.

Following a stellar academic performance in high school, Alisha completed a Certificate III in Tourism as a trainee with the WA Visitor Centre in just seven months.

Two weeks into her traineeship she was selected to speak to Curtin University international students on tourist activities in Perth and was delegated increased responsibility by her managers.

“Through my traineeship at the WA Visitor Centre I was given a fantastic opportunity to learn about my own indigenous culture and travel around the State to witness first hand the products that we are promoting,” Alisha said.

Alisha is also activity involved in her community, having mentored other indigenous students and conducted peer counseling at her high school, receiving numerous awards and commendations.

“The traineeship journey and everything I have been through has truly shaped me as a person,” she said.

“It has made me realise that I do have the capacity to be an effective ambassador for any industry that I work in, for my multicultural community and Australia.”

“I have confidence that I will achieve in everything I apply myself to. Even when the outlook is grim I can approach a task positively and give it my best shot. I am proud of where I come from, who I am and what I will achieve in the future.”

A Japanese born jewellery designer who combines running her own pearl business with study at Central TAFE has won the College’s top student honour.

Michiyo Kikuchi from Leederville was named Central TAFE’s 2009 Student of the Year at a ceremony tonight.

Michiyo joined fellow winners on the night including trainee Samantha Perry, who won Apprentice/Trainee of the Year. 

Samantha successfully completed a Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical) and a traineeship with boutique wealth management company Plan B.

Maltese born Oliver Cardona was named International Student of the Year.  Oliver is currently studying an Advanced Diploma of Photography at Central TAFE having already acquired a Certificate IV in Photoimaging and Diploma of Photography in 2007 and 2008 respectively. 

In the Access and Equity category, Yuan Zhou was selected as a winner for the English as a Second Language (ESL) category, while Helen Steffanoni picked up top honours for Student with a Disability.

The annual event officially recognises, rewards and promotes student and staff excellence at one WA’s largest training organisations. 

The Student of the Year award is another impressive milestone for Michiyo who only arrived in Perth in 2001.  In just a short time she has learnt a new language, trained in a brand new career, set up her own business, won national design awards and studied at Central TAFE.

The Diploma of Jewellery Design student originally trained as a nurse in her native Japan before coming to Australia and securing work as a technical jeweller in a pearl wholesale company. 

Her passion for the industry was cemented in a unique opportunity in 2003. Michiyo was given a chance by her company to go out pearl seeding.  This is a complex process aimed at keeping pearls developing smoothly to minimise blemishes.

Michiyo developed her own wholesale business, KIKU Pearls, in 2007 which provided an income, while enabling her to build on her skills at Central TAFE.  She commenced a Certificate IV Art & Design (Jewellery) as a part time student and is currently completing her Diploma of Jewellery Design at the college’s Perth campus.

Honours have been steadily coming her way with Michiyo recently winning the national AGR Matthey Next Generation Jewellery Design Competition. These prestigious awards recognise innovation and excellence from Australia’s up-coming jewellery designers.

She also had her work exhibited in the 2009 ‘designEx’ Exhibition in Melbourne.

“I’ve always loved jewellery and through Central TAFE I have learned the skills and techniques to bring my ideas to life,” said Michiyo.

“Through my work and involvement with the Japanese community here in WA, I feel I am now in a unique position to offer guidance, information and inspiration to my fellow students who have come from overseas.”

Speaking at the presentation ceremony Central TAFE Managing Director Neil Fernandes said that the students exemplified the amazing results dedication can bring.

“Our student winners illustrate what can be achieved through hard work.  Their achievements and bright futures are testament to the healthy state of vocational education and training in WA,” he said.

Barely in Australia for a year, Queens Park student Yuan Zhou has been awarded major honours at the 2009 Central TAFE Awards.

The Minister for Training, the Hon Peter Collier presented Yuan with the prize as the top student in the English as a Second Language program at tonight's awards presentations at Government House Ballroom.

The gala annual event officially recognises, rewards and promotes student and staff excellence at one WA’s largest training organisations. 

As a new migrant, Yuan began at Central TAFE in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP). She made quick progress and soon acquired a Certificate III in Spoken and Written English.

Yuan also wanted to find a way to get involved in the community.

She decided to become a volunteer, which she thought would also help develop her language skills.  She soon found herself working for Catholic Migrant Services, helping in nursing homes and working with migration agents.

In China, Yuan had a bachelors and masters degree in law and is keen to return to her profession.  Legal studies can be complex even for native English speakers so Yuan is evidently facing a huge challenge.

Undaunted however, Yuan is embarking on a Certificate IV in Legal Studies at Central TAFE.

“I believe where there’s a will there’s a way.  I made up my mind to achieve my goal and devote my time and effort as much as I can to the studies,” said Yuan.

Yuan is clearly not lacking in determination.  Soon after arriving she attended a conference for Refugee and Immigrant Women. Once back at Central TAFE she did a presentation on all she had learnt to over 30 lecturers from the AMEP program.

Nominated for the award by her lecturers, Yuan has clearly impressed in a very short space of time.

Taking time aside from her own goals, she even manages to help others learn English and is always looking for ways in which she can help other new migrants.

A strong work ethic and positive attitude have seen Samantha Perry from Ferndale win the Apprentice/Trainee of the Year prize at the 2009 Central TAFE Awards.

Samantha successfully completed a Certificate III in Financial Services (Accounts Clerical) and a traineeship with boutique wealth management company Plan B.

A highly respected employee, Samantha showed great skill in balancing her study requirements with the needs of the workplace.

Samantha edged out fellow nominees Courtney Grahame and Lauren Grohovaz, who both completed traineeships in Beauty Therapy.

The Minister for Training, the Hon Peter Collier presented Samantha with her award at a gala event at the Government House Ballroom on tonight.

The annual event officially recognises, rewards and promotes student and staff excellence at one WA’s largest training organisations. 

It’s not all work and no play for Samantha, who has helped in fundraising for Como Senior High School’s World Challenge trip to Vietnam. 

She is also keen on sports, having regularly competed in volleyball and softball competitions.

Currently studying a Certificate IV in Financial Services (Accounting), Samantha hopes to complete a Diploma in Accounting at Central TAFE before going to university and reaching her goal of becoming an accountant.

Winner of numerous photography awards, Swan View resident Oliver Cardona has  picked up further honours in being named Central TAFE’s 2009 International Student of the Year.

The annual event officially recognises, rewards and promotes student and staff excellence at one WA’s largest training organisations. 

Oliver is currently studying an Advanced Diploma of Photography at Central TAFE having already acquired a Certificate IV in Photoimaging and Diploma of Photography in 2007 and 2008 respectively. 

Clearly no stranger to awards, Oliver picked up ‘student of the year’ prizes for both of his earlier courses.

A big fan of nature photography, Oliver has also won honours in the National Tertiary Student Photographic competition celebrating ‘biodiversity in our backyard’.

Nominated for the International Student award by Central TAFE staff, Oliver was described by lecturers as “attentive, knowledge and selfless in sharing his knowledgeable with others”. 

He also mentors and assists a disadvantaged student.

Oliver is determined to keep up to date with new photography techniques and has secured some part time work as a medical photographer with Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital.

Nedlands student Helen Steffanoni has overcome considerable personal setbacks to win a major prize at the 2009 Central TAFE Awards.

The Minister for Training, the Hon Peter Collier presented Helen with her award the most outstanding Student with a Disability at the gala event at Government House Ballroom tonight.

The annual event officially recognises, rewards and promotes student and staff excellence at one WA’s largest training organisations. 

Helen was born with Rubella syndrome which left her with multiple disabilities including learning, sight and hearing.  This meant she missed out on formal schooling.

However, starting at Central TAFE in 1998 was the beginning of a fantastic journey to an independent life for Helen.

She did numerous part time courses before starting the full time Certificate I in Work Education in 2008.  Such was her rapid progress Helen even became a mentor for some of the younger students in the class.

Although Helen’s hearing was deteriorating in 2005 she was able to successfully have cochlea implants. Following the procedure she was able to hear things she had never previously heard.  Things most people take for granted such as birdsong and ticking clocks.

As her hearing improved, Helen set about learning thousands of new words and as she did so, her communication skills and blossomed and thirst for learning intensified.

“Undergoing two operations for my cochlear implants and then two more for the insertion of valves in my eyes was very challenging and at times painful," said Helen.

"The learning process following the implants was frustrating at times.  The sound produced has been likened to Donald Duck talking.  It took roughly three years of hard work and persistence to get to the point where I am now.”

Central TAFE Managing Director Neil Fernandes was thrilled at how training had helped Helen in her journey to an independent life.

“Helen’s story is truly inspiring. Her positive outlook and willingness to tackle difficult challenges head on demonstrates why she is such a deserving winner,” he said.

Helen has subsequently moved into her own unit and started further study. 

The acquistion of further literary and mathematical skills will open up more employment options for this impressive winner.

Staff play a critical role in the success of Central TAFE and last night saw some of its outstanding employees honoured at the College's annual award night.

The Minister for Training, the Hon Peter Collier presented several awards at the gala event tonight at the Government House Ballroom to those who have gone the extra mile. 

The event, hosted by media personality Verity James, officially recognises, rewards and promotes student and staff excellence. 

Vivienne Scott and Cassandra Breton, Professional Development Trainers, took out the Team Award for the pioneering work they have put into the development of an induction course for new lecturing staff.

This invaluable course provides lecturers with all the information they require to make a seamless transition into their new role. 

Vivienne and Cassandra reviewed the existing induction program and transformed it into one that was more relevant, flexible and interactive. 

They also redesigned the program so it could be completed in a shorter timeframe and developed a comprehensive new lecturers mentoring program.  Both programs have made a significant difference to the working lives of our lecturing staff.

College Events Coordinator Lisa De Cesare took out top honours in the Service Award category. 

Starting her career with Central TAFE at 17, Lisa has worked in many departments and built up great relationships across numerous areas of the College.

This stood her in good stead for her current role which includes organising the annual graduation events for Central TAFE students. These large scale events require an incredible attention to detail, as well as flawless interpersonal skills. 

Lisa’s calm demeanour and ability to handle all the glitches and last minute changes that such events involve made her a popular and worthy recipient of an award celebrating outstanding service.

Kim Siragusa, a Coordinator from the Music portfolio at the Leederville campus, won the Innovation and Leadership award.  

Kim completely restructured the delivery of Certificate III and Certificate IV courses in Music (Technical Production) . This not only addressed completion rate issues, but enhanced student satisfaction and compressed a two year course into one, without any drop in quality.

Kim also developed a new music course in response to College, state and national objectives and consistently takes time to mentor and support his colleagues. 

Central TAFE Managing Director Neil Fernandes said he was very proud of the efforts of College staff. 

"At Central, I am constantly impressed by the passion, innovation and dedication our staff bring to their roles," he said.

"The staff we have honoured tonight are truly worthy of our recognition, consistently giving their all to make Central the leading training organisation in WA."

Central TAFE has been officially honoured as Western Australia’s Large Training Provider of the Year.  The College was presented with this auspicious award at a gala dinner at the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre.

Training Minister, The Hon Peter Collier MLC attended the event which is hosted annually by the Department of Education and Training.

The WA Training Awards recognise and reward outstanding achievements of apprentices, trainees and vocational students, and the contribution to training made by trainers, training organisations and employers.

The Large Training Provider of the Year Award won by Central TAFE recognises outstanding achievements demonstrated by large registered training providers (1500+ students) in all aspects of the delivery of vocational education and training.

As the winner, Central TAFE secured $8,000 worth of advertising from The Sunday Times and will now go forward to represent the State at the Australian Training Awards held at Canberra in November. 

The award is not just recognition for the outstanding calibre of Central’s training, but is an amazing marketing resource, with an opportunity to leverage off the honour in all marketing and promotion for the following year.

Central TAFE MD Neil Fernandes received the award on behalf of the College and was delighted with the official recognition that comes with it.

“The award is testament to the dedication of Central TAFE’s 1200 staff and is a result of their unwavering passion, innovation and desire to improve services year on year,” he said.

“Minister Collier has thrown down the gauntlet for us all to lift the status of training. We, at Central, accept that challenge and can assure him and the people of WA that the best is yet to come.”

The night also saw individual Central TAFE students honoured.  Jewellery Student Sally Hanbury was a finalist for Vocational Student of the Year.  Dental Technician Matthew Bailey, a graduate of OHCWA, was a finalist for WA Apprentice of The Year. Finally, Draftsman Simon Jacques was a finalist in the Trainee of the Year category.

We have a new name for a new training environment.  This is the start of a new era for Central as it forges a new path in the rapidly changing world of training. 

It is more than just a change of name and logo - it represents a new direction for the College as it is given increased autonomy and flexibility to meet the skill needs of our State. The WA State Government is committed to raising the profile of training and Central is set to develop its products and services and enhance its established centres of specialisation.  Areas such as engineering and mining, where for example we have just launched ‘The CUT Mine’ a brand new mining training tunnel underneath our Northbridge campus.  

The new identity is the latest evolutionary step for Central, the State’s oldest post-secondary education institution which first opened its doors in 1900, as Perth Technical College.

Prospective students please note there has been a change in the application procedure for specific courses.  The courses listed above NO LONGER REQUIRE YOU TO SUBMIT A FOLIO FOR ASSESSMENT.  As a result the closing date for submissions for these courses has been extended to 13 November 2009. These courses will now be assessed according to standard selection criteria.

Whist every effort will be made to ensure minimal disruption to traffic and pedestrian movements some road lane and footpath closures, along with the associated delays, should be expected. Generally, one lane of traffic will remain operational at all times and pedestrian access and movements will be facilitated as much as possible without compromising safety.

Once completed, the works will produce a functional and aesthetically pleasing streetscape complementing both commercial and residential assets.

Tourism WA in partnership Central TAFE is offering all permanent full-time and part-time staff of WA Visitor Centres the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised tourism qualification.

All eligible Visitor Centre staff will be able to apply for a Certificate III in Tourism (Visitor Information Services).  Managers of Visitor Centres are eligible to undertake the Certificate IV in Tourism.

Your online trainers are available Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 5.00pm and Tuesday nights until 7.00pm.
