One of the key competencies applicable to all levels of training is 'information literacy', the ability to collect, analyse and organise information. As defined by the American Library Association (1989), information literacy is an understanding and set of abilities enabling individuals to:
| recognise when information is needed and have the capacity to locate, evaluate and use effectively the information. Ultimately information literate people are those who have learned how to learn. They are prepared for lifelong learning because they can always find the information for any task or decision at hand. |
In February 2004, the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) and the Australian & New Zealand Institute for Information Literacy (ANZIIL) released the Australian & New Zealand Information Literacy Framework. This document provides a framework for embedding information literacy in the design and teaching of educational programs, and for assessing the information literate individual.
The Libraries at Central TAFE strive to develop information competencies in students in order for them to apply these skills to become independent lifelong learners. This is achieved through partnerships with academic staff as joint facilitators of learning to better equip our TAFE students.
The School librarians provide a Library and Information Skills Training (LIST) Program that is based on the Standards and aims to develop information literacy competencies in Central TAFE students.
