How can I save money on textbook costs?

You could try purchasing second hand either from students who have placed ads on the student notice board outside the Bookshop or from websites such as textbookexchange.com. Be aware though - you may not be buying the correct edition. The lecturer may have decided to go with a different edition, i.e. 5th versus 6th. You could be purchasing a U.S. edition when the Australian is required. Is there a CD? In most cases if the CD has been used by the previous owner it is unlikely you will be able to download on your own PC. CDs are usually a once only download or to be used on one PC only. The text may include questions, activities etc which may have already been written in or highlighted.
